Great game in last night but I can't believe no one talked about how our PP could not execute at all. Obviously it was overlooked because of the big win but this could be a serious problem come later on.

Who gives a fuck who plays on what line #. Line numbers mean fuck all, honestly.

The only line that should be recognized is #4 (the checking mother fuckers). The other 3 are a balanced attack and just because some ppl on them are good doesn't make them 1 or 2. Demitra isn't like God, and nor the Sedins, so what diff does it make who is considered line 1 or 2. Pyatt is a hockey player, and he fits into his role with his linemates. Ya he is slow, he's also big and tall. Why the fuck did Todd bertuzzi play with naslund and morrison. Both of them look and skate the complete opposite of him. Yet, they were successful together because of the balance.

In hockey, you can't have line 1 = speedy guys who score, line 2 = decent guys who can score, line 3 big guys who hit, line 4 shitty guys who get 5 mins of ice per game.

If you had that, the other team would assemble the appropriate skaters to defeat your strategy and would embarrass each line individually not only on the ice but on the scoreboard.

Creating a balanced team, a balanced LINE, creates chemistry all teams strive to achieve. It creates threats every minute of every period which will result in wins.

I kinda went off here haha but im just tired of the line 1 and line 2 bullshit. and ppl bashing Taylor Pyatt cuz he doesn't skate as fast as Raymond, or possess the same hands as Demitra.

Hockey players hide their lights
Sean Avery's wrong about what the problem is

Ed Willes
The Province

Friday, October 10, 2008

Self-appointed expert Sean Avery said this week the NHL could sell itself if he was placed in charge of the league's marketing, and considering the level of notoriety he's received as a 15-goal scorer, maybe Gary Bettman should listen to him.

Either that or stop trying to place franchises in Nashville and south Florida.

But Avery said something else during his recent dig-me interview with ESPN that merits further examination and, inadvertently of course, reveals something profound about the NHL, its players and what passes for marketability in today's world.

While lamenting the game's low profile in the States, hockey's biggest brain said: "Nobody cares about Jarome Iginla and guys like that. They're just not exciting enough. They don't bring enough to the game."

So here's the question: Should Iginla be faulted for not doing more to sell the game? Or should the NHL be faulted for not selling Iginla, who's one of the five best players in hockey, who's thoughtful, considerate, grounded, ridiculously approachable and unfailingly good natured.

I mean, if you can't market a player like that, there's either a problem with your sales pitch or people just aren't interested in what you're selling. The fact is there's an Iginla in every locker room in the NHL -- maybe without a Nigerian father named Elvis, but a player who represents the values we are supposed to admire most in our athletes.

Those players remain the NHL's greatest asset. They just have to do a better job of telling their stories.

"It goes back to the culture of hockey," said Flames defenceman Robyn Regehr, before the Canucks rolled the Flames 6-0 in their season-opener, igniting a huge controversy over the Stanley Cup parade route.

"We were taught when we started playing that the team comes first. In other sports there's a lot less focus on that and a lot more on individuality.

"We're just not very flashy, in-your-face people."

Maybe not. But that doesn't make them any less interesting.

This summer, for example, Regehr and Boston Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara travelled to Mozambique with Right To Play, to work with some of the most underprivileged children in the world. Granted, that might not be as interesting as a Sean Avery interview, but it did have its points.

"They were excited to see us, even though they didn't have any idea what we did or who we were." said Regehr. "They just thought we were giants (Regehr is 6-foot-3 and Chara is 6-foot-9). We were the tallest people they'd ever seen."

Regehr also told a story about trying to bring hockey to the children of Mozambique. After their initial attempts to explain concepts such as ice failed, Regehr and Chara grabbed branches from a nearby tree and demonstrated a slapshot. One kid then came out of the crowd, grabbed his own branch and there, in a remote corner of south-east Africa, wound up like Bobby Hull.

And your point is?

OK, sometimes you have to coax it out of them, but the game is full of players like Regehr and Chara with stories to tell; stories that should appeal to a wider audience; stories that should sell the game.

Scott Gomez's father is Mexican. His mother is Colombian. They met in Alaska, where he learned to play hockey.

Paul Kariya's late father T.K. was born in an internment camp in B.C. during the Second World War and later played rugby for Canada. Paul's sister Noriko is a pro boxer.

As for Regehr, he was born in Brazil because his parents were Mennonite missionaries. He's also strong enough to take on the NHL's toughest hombres and soft enough to travel halfway around the world to help needy kids.

These stories are everywhere in the NHL. Funny stories. Sad stories. Human stories. But, most of all, stories that reveal so much about the game and the people who play it.

Iginla was asked if he'd change to make himself more colourful.

"First of all I probably couldn't," he said with a laugh. "But I wouldn't go on [Avery's] advice."

Now, that's good marketing.

A heartening sign for Canuck fans

Iain MacIntyre
Vancouver Sun

Thursday, October 09, 2008

While it's opening night for the Vancouver Canucks, the National Hockey League has also returned to Winnipeg. At least, NHL players are there.

As the Canucks readied themselves this week for tonight's season-opener against the Calgary Flames, one of the most encouraging signs for hockey fans here is that Matt Pettinger and Jason Krog were sent to the Manitoba Moose, joining newcomer Michel Ouellet. Another former Canuck regular, Jeff Cowan, was loaned to the St. Louis Blues' farm team.

This isn't a cheer for their demotion to the minors. But all four players are on one-way NHL contracts, meaning the Canucks will be paying $3.825 million US this season to clear them from the roster. And that is encouraging because it means the Canucks really are making winning -- picking the best players on merit -- their top priority. That 3.8M is the cost of having Mason Raymond, Jannik Hansen, Mike Brown and Rick Rypien on the team.

It might be embarrassing for owner Francesco Aquilini, especially since -- despite what the team might say -- there is little chance any of those players will help the Canucks this season because they're subject to recall waivers. But it's a heartening sign for fans.

kudos to the Canucks organization for putting together a great tribute for Luc Bourdon

Bert is a skilled player and wasn't exactly slow. Plus he hit, screened, made plays and scored.

Unfortunately Pyatt can't hit or doesn't want to hit, doesn’t screen, can't make plays and is slower than an overweight Kyle Wellwood.

Let's just hope Pyatt can do what Carter did with the Sedins and that is keeping his stick on the ice and hope for prefect passes from Demitra.

My bad, I shouldn't of said "2nd liner." I meant to say top 6 forward on the team. It's only been one game but I haven't seen Pyatt do too much in terms of chemistry or his own individual play. To compare Pyatt and Bertuzzi is pretty much exactly why so many people are hating on Pyatt. The only thing they have in common is size, and only one of them uses it.

Hopefully he can develop faster and play more phsyical. It seems the whole team's direction is more physical play now. Even "the friendly giant" Ohlund has started to step it up and throw some hard hits now. It's beautiful.

Like someone mentioned before, Ohlund pound for pound is the guy with the most muscle on the team if you see him in real life. It is good to see him hitting. I love the physical presence of our D.

I agree that yea, it is difficult to compare the two, but balance was my point. Bert was incredible. He was a giant with soft hands. Pyatt is still young though. He did get a few hits in yesterday that were nice but nothing outstanding. It's only one game, let's see how this pans out.

ohlund has been like that from day 1 of his nhl career. but the last 2 years no one on the team was tough enough to back ohlund up in case the other player retaliated. give credit to cowan for sticking up for his teammates but he ended up being pounded on. now that theres toughness inserted back into the lineup, ohlund can now return to his style of play and not worry about being attacked right afterwards. that also goes for the rest of the skilled players on the team who now can play their style of game as well

very strange listening to crow do the colour last nite. listening to him say "i remember a few years ago when calgary and vancouver met....." so strange listening to him talk like he watched the game, not coached it.

and he needs to learn how to condense what hes saying. he would ramble on for quite a while trying to get a simple point across. not bad for a noob tho.
