(I think with Gretzky, management was the deal breaker wasn't it? I think I heard rumours he wasn't happy with Canuck management, I can't confirm it though).

Well, it all depends on the player(s) involved, of course... I'm not suggesting Gaborik would come here out of friendship for Demitra (in fact, I don't recall ever hearing anything about them being buddy-buddy, not like you always heard about Nazzy and Bert, or Bure and Odjick), but the fact that they played well together before, coupled with Vancouver looking like a good system to play in (at least according to Demitra) could be enticements for him.

In any case, there's pretty much zero chance that Minny would TRADE Gaborik here, given the rivalry the two teams have - any team would be stupid to send a potential major scoring threat to a team in the same CONFERENCE, let alone a DIVISION rival. That would be like the Rangers trading Naslund to the Islanders, or Ottawa trading Alfredsson to Montreal. So there's really no worry about taking on his current salary.

If he doesn't re-sign wherever he lands, and goes for free agency come summer, we have a chance to get him for substantially less, as most other interested teams would also be concerned about his injuries and durability. There's always the chance, of course, that someone will offer him more than he's really worth, but there's also the chance that if this is an attractive destination, he'd sign here for a discount, much like Hossa did with Detroit this year.

AND, assuming the Sundin/Montreal/Gaborik/Vancouver scenario WERE actually to play out, we'd still only be on the hook for his salary pro-rated to the remainder of the season... as well as freeing up a couple million dollars (also pro-rated) to snag someone else for a playoff push, IF Sundin didn't pan out (if he did though, well, who cares about the Habs?)

Everytime I think about the 94 run to the Stanley cup finals, I think of that one picture where Trevor Linden is giving Kirk Mclean a hug. That was a tight team as well.

That's awesome! It's not every game that you see the entire team come out to congratulate their goaltender... let alone the #1 goaltender coming out with a big smile and huge props for his backup. For as "competitive" and "a workaholic" as Lu is, he's genuinely stoked for Sanford - is there any doubt left that this guy deserves to be Captain?

Kudos to Sanford - he sits in Lu's shadow every night, having to jump in every 6-8 weeks and still be sharp, and yet he takes it in stride and accepts his place on the team. First win as a starter in, what, almost a year? No surprise the boys are happy for him.

edit... i think they should change the song when we win at gm place.. they should start it with Flair's Wooooooo then play the Ole song
Weird. My friends also met one of the Aquilini brothers (the bald one) in NYC last year and said he was a really nice guy.

NHL vs. NBA: Hockey winning in attendance, fan enthusiasm.

t was the June 20, 1994 issue of Sports Illustrated, back when that publication's cover stories and proclamations shaped the conversation for sports culture in the U.S. The story by writer E.M. Swift was titled "Hot Not: While the NBA's image has cooled, the NHL has ignited surprising new interest in hockey." It appeared at a time when offense was down and embarrassing moments were up in the NBA, while Mark Messier's New York Rangers were the sports story of the year.

The SI article has become something of a legend for puckheads, some of whom are convinced it foretold of an NHL surge in popularity past the NBA's -- one that was short-circuited by the 1995 lockout. It's like hockey's answer to the UFO crash in Roswell: infamous and resonating, but everyone has a different version of the truth. The Hockey's Future boards even had a thread created to "myth-bust" what fans claim the story reported.

Yet 14 years later, we find ourselves at another "Hot Not" moment for the NHL and the NBA, the two most popular professional arena sports in North America (sorry, lacrosse). Both leagues are taking their licks as the economy worsens; but the numbers show the NHL's gains and stability in attendance, while basketball fans are concerned about what they see as a clear enthusiasm gap in the NBA.

You can't blame Supersonic Soul for being bitter about the NBA after the Seattle Sonics blog saw its team relocated to Oklahoma City. But it made waves this week by publishing this chart that tracks average attendance in the NBA vs. the NHL over the last several years:
