Canucks Acquire Forward Steve Bernier
Vancouver Canucks
Jul 4, 2008, 2:00 PM EDT
Bernier
Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the club has acquired right wing, Steve Bernier from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round Draft pick in 2010 and third round pick (Los Angeles’ selection) in 2009.
“Steve Bernier is a highly regarded young player who’s enjoyed success early in his career,” said Gillis. “With his right-handed shot he will be a great addition to our top six forward group and an asset to our power play.”
Bernier, 23, split the 2007-08 season between the Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks combining for 32 points (16-16-32) and 64 penalty minutes in 76 games played. In 177 career NHL games Bernier has recorded 45 goals, 45 assists (45-45-90) and 128 penalty minutes. Bernier captured a gold medal with Team Canada at the World Under-18 Championships in Yaroslavl, Russia in 2003.
The 6-foot-2, 225 lbs. native of Quebec City, PQ, was originally selected in the 1st round, 16th overall in 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

this is really heart breaking, all our forwards are leaving, we have money to sign people except they either arent going to come or gillis hasnt approached them/gave them an offer.
now were fucked cause luongo will possibly leave when his contract is up if we dont turn this around.

good signing on bernier! I like to see Gillis signing all these younger players instead of bringing in players past their prime, if were gonna take unproven talent, might as well take the younger players available

Nice. Very happy with the pickup of Bernier. I'd like to see him play the Sedin line.

Sabres have way too many forwards, especially RWs and desperately need a hard hitting stay at home D man. They lost the bidding on Orpik and are currently talking to Jason Smith, if Smith falls thru perhaps a Bieksa for one of the Sabres RWs not named Pominville would benefit both teams.

I posted this earlier this morning on another board... I've already gone over my thoughts on a couple of these, but I'm just gonna paste the thing in its entirety.
--------
Okay, I feel a rant coming on, because I've been reading the same mindless knee-jerk fanwanking for weeks now and it's driving me nuts. Let's address a few of the ridiculous claims that have been going around.
Claim: Other GMs won't deal with Gillis because they hate him.
Rebuttal: Then they won't last long in their jobs. Other GMs hated Bobby Clarke, they still dealt with him. I'm sure Brian Burke isn't very popular with some guys either (Kevin Lowe and him are BEST BUDS!), yet they still deal with him. The reality is, a GM's first priority is to the good of his team; his personal feelings toward his peers has to be put aside or he won't last a week in his job.
Claim: Players don't want to come here because of AV's defensive system.
Rebuttal: That hasn't been a problem for Minnesota or New Jersey, who've been defensive, borderline trapping teams for years.
Claim: Players don't want to come here because of the travel schedule.
Rebuttal: The team with probably THE WORST travel schedule in the league is arguably Detroit. They're closer to an Eastern team than a Western team, yet have to play 95% of their games in the West. That doesn't seem to deter players from wanting to go there (ref. Marian Hossa).
Claim: Gillis sucks because hasn't made a "big splash" move.
Rebuttal: He didn't re-sign Naslund. That splashy enough for ya? No? He hasn't re-signed Mo either, that's teetering on the edge of the diving board. Now some are calling for him to trade Lu for a bunch of prospects, blow up the team, start from scratch, shoot for the top pick next year... that would be Andre The Giant with a cannonball off the 15m platform.
Claim: Gillis sucks because he slammed Nonis.
Rebuttal: Really? He was asked if he thought the team was a cup contender; he said no. I don't recall him BLAMING anyone in particular. You would prefer he should bullshit everyone and say yes even if he doesn't believe it? Fact: he has never said an unkind word (in public at least) against his predecessors.
Claim: Gillis sucks because he's never been a GM before and he doesn't know what he's doing.
Rebuttal: And your long career as a GM makes you a better judge of that? Sit the fuck down.
Claim: Aquilini is an idiot because he hired Gillis after only a week without even interviewing him.
Rebuttal: If you seriously believe this, you need to be shot in the head, because you're a moron and your usefulness to the world is at an end. 'Nuff said.

If Gillis is picking up all these young guys with potential, might as well fold and rebuild, trade Luongo for some big shot scorer that can impact other players around him, and bring up Schneider whenever he's ready and hope he's as good as everyone says.

Up front, we have 2/3 of a first line. Second line we could probably patch something together with Wellwood and Pyatt. It's not like it was any better last yr. But we definitely need that impact first line. | LOL That was what I wrote last night. Get up now and look what happens! |

Mo even said he was playing hurt most of the time. That says a lot about his will to play but he's also had off-season surgery three years (I think) in a row.
