I don't get why FLA would not J.Bo walk away like that. Even if they were serious about the playoffs they would've loaded up. Instead they did nothing which kind of means they aren't serious for a big push, so why not get at least something in return!

I'm with the other guy, I don't get the 3 way CAR/LA/EDM trade. Why would LA give up O'Sullivan and a draft pick for Justin Williams. I thought they were still rebuilding?

Martin is pretty smart I tihnk... because he took a chance to get huge returns for Bouwmeester... didn't... so now he gets to use him to push into the playoffs and make a lot of money for the franchise in playoff games and possibly future sales of season tickets for next year and the Panthers can still trade the exclusive rights to talk to him before July 1 for a draft pick or even hope that the run in the playoffs and forward focus of the team will make him reconsider the offer to stay in nice sunny Florida.

^ Problem with trading him for his negotiating rights is that it won't net Martin as big of a return.

I'm glad Gillis didn't pull the trigger on Bouwmeester and give up our young talent and/or our draft picks. Look how fucked the Leafs are because they gave up their picks because they tried to get players at the deadline.

Burke tried really hard to reverse that this year. Seriously. He is rebuilding like mad.

Though this rebuild should have been made years ago.

Yup, Burke really has his work cut out in Toronto.

I can't believe how many hockey writers are jumping on the Flames bandwagon after yesterday’s trade. Here's another article;

Quote:
Flames pay the price … and come out a winner

GM Darryl Sutter, fearless as a player, proves he has the guts to go get what his team needs to compete for the Stanley Cup. Kudos to Sutter for the Olli Jokinen deal.

There were too many general managers who didn’t want to pay the price. In a tight market, the asking price for elite players was high. That’s why Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline passed with Jay Bouwmeester, Chris Pronger and Keith Tkachuk still on their original teams.

But on Wednesday, one team was willing to sacrifice the future. One team acknowledged the small window of opportunity NHL teams have to win a Stanley Cup and said: Forget it. We want to win now.

That’s why, in a day muddled with forgettable deals, one team emerged as a clear-cut winner.

By acquiring center Olli Jokinen and bringing defenseman Jordan Leopold back, the Calgary Flames made their intentions clear. They want to win a Cup. This season.

The San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings, the presumed Western Conference finalists, now have company.

“They’ve put themselves in good position over there,” Leopold said during a conference call. “I’m just thrilled to have a chance to come to a contender and be able to compete with the top teams in the West.”

Trades made on deadline day are high risk. Brian Burke, who was active as a seller during his first deadline day as Toronto Maple Leafs GM, said he rarely made deals around the deadline when he was running the Ducks because the payoff isn’t always there.

There’s no guarantee for teams willing to take the risk. Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson was asked if he wanted to guarantee a playoff spot after acquiring his long sought-after center in Antoine Vermette.

“Not a chance,” he quickly answered.

Howson knows what Burke knows. Making a splash at the deadline doesn’t mean a thing if the players don’t respond. But what GM Darryl Sutter did in Calgary was worth the risk.

He brought in Jokinen, the kind of player he needs to compete in the West—a big-bodied center who can score goals. Jokinen also comes with a reputation as a guy who isn’t great in the locker room, and people see his lack of a playoff experience as a red flag.

But he didn’t sound like a guy who was going to upset the rising Flames.

“It’s a good feeling right now,” Jokinen said.

It can get even better.

“I don’t think I’ve played at a level I can play this year,” Jokinen said. “Going to a place where you know you’re the focus is going to be very challenging … As an athlete you want to push yourself to be better, when you play with the great players Calgary has, it pushes every player to be better.”

His excitement was evident and the energy these trades should bring to the Flames is immeasurable.

Washington Capitals GM George McPhee talked about his reluctance to give up prospects to acquire Pronger.

Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli was reluctant to upset team chemistry to add a major piece to a squad capable of advancing to the Stanley Cup finals.

Only Sutter was willing to pony up the price. And because of it, the Flames added a serious talent and someone excited to make a serious impact.

“It’s amazing,” Jokinen said, searching for different ways to describe his enthusiasm. “There are so many good players there. If you look at the roster, it’s pretty amazing. If you’re in the lineup, you’re going to play with great players. It’s a good feeling.”

Yes i'm the biggest Flames hater around but fuck, enough is a enough lol.

I don't seeing him re-signing here not after he turned down that huge ~$6M/yr offer. It's a pretty big gamble to risk the future of your club for just 4-5 playoff game revenue, imo.

I would have traded Bieksa, Raymond + conditional 1st if JayBo was traded here with an agreement to sign

We have one of the best goalies in the world and with JayBo we finally get that all-star D that we've never really had.

Lets try to break this down

Raymond = nothing but a plug - has been given all the opportunity in the world to succeed on this team and what has he done to show for me? he plays himself out of the top 6.

Bieksa = Good top 4 D that hits, fights and scores but still lacks the mental maturity from making boneheaded plays and pinching in when he shouldn't

1st round pick = Our pick will probably be in the early 20's position. This year's draft is deep but there isn't that many players in that range that will be able to jump in within the next 2-3 years.

Jaybo = All-star player that has the on ice vision that Bieksa doesn't have. Yes Bieksa has the same point total as Jaybo but Florida's offense is pathetic. Jaybo is just entering his prime and can easily rack up 50-60 points with a decent offense.

You guys have to remember that Lu is only here for another year with no guarantee that he will re-sign with us. Our time to make a hard push is now. We have the offense and the goaltender. I would have jumped for joy if that trade went thru because I truly believe Jaybo was what we needed to push us from a good team into a contender.

I guess for someone looking in who's watched the Canucks play a few games would think the Canucks missed the boat at the deadline but for all fans who have been watching the Canucks since the first game of the season know we have a pretty good team that could do some damage in the playoffs. And quite honestly the only reason why we fucked up our chances for the NW title is because Lu went down. The Canucks and Flames are almost identical, that's why I would love to see a first round matchup between the two.

On paper, the Canucks look like they can run with the top teams. But they gotta show up at the drop of the puck and play a full 60 min in order for that to happen. If they can keep up with their play as of late and not run out of steam, they can make it far.

haha hilarious goal against Boucher in the wild vs sharks game...

basically the puck was randomly flipped onto the goal from the blueline and the goalie mishandled it causing the game to tie up at 3-3 with 8 mins left..

Bloodly hell, the Wild beat the Sharks with 13 seconds left in OT. First time in 13 years the Sharks blew a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers are actually pretty decent this year (6th in the East) and they've only scored 8 fewer goals than the Canucks.

Bieksa's played 11 fewer games than Bouwmeester. Bouwmeester has gotten 287 minutes on the PP compared to Bieksa's 217 but has fewer powerplay points than Bieksa. I'm not saying Bouwmeester isn't a good defenseman, he is, but IMO, he's not head and shoulders better than Bieksa at this point. He might be head and shoulders better than Bieksa in a year or two but just not right now.

As much as I would've liked Bouwmeester here, I'm glad Gillis didn't make that trade. There's probably no way we can sign Bouwmeester in the offseason anyways, he turned down 6m a year from the Panthers so I'm guessing he's seeking something near the 6.5 that Phaneuf and Jovo gets. 2 Sedins at possibly 6 each, Luongo at 6.75, Bouwmeester at 6.5, That's probably more than half the Canucks cap on 4 players (assuming the cap goes down to 50 or less).
