well, to defend Sundin... he did say he doesn't even know if he is planning to play anymore in NHL... so even a 10million offer is irrelavant at that point.
Then again, 10 million alone should be able to pull players out of retirement.
Embarrassing as it is, Gillis is quite desparate, and so are the Canucks.
If this deal pulls through, and Sundin manages to captain canucks to 3rd round, Gillis' is gonna look like a genious.
Vermette and Afinogenov would give better offense, for the exchange of leadership. Sounds interesting.

For 10 million, is there anyone else better than around other than this asshole? Someone that wants to play hockey.

Vermette and Afinogenov would be a better move IMO.. im done this what if shit though, Sundin is so friggin' annoying.
And in regards to the travel schedule, i'm pretty sure that is the last variable on Sundin's mind.

jp barry (i'm paraphrasing): six teams are ready and willing to make a move for sundin at this point (today).
montreal
toronto
vancouver
....
....
....
wouldn't say who else, but he did say NYR would be willing to move some players to get him.

i'm willing to wait until training camp for Sundin, and if he doesnt sign then so be it and we'll move forward with what we have
dumping the sundin offer and going after other players would imo make Gillis look like he is scared and wants to please the fans, not put a quality product on the ice for years to come.

he also said that there's a zero percent chance that the sedins would never split up and play for different teams.

This is business, and they'll do watever they can to win. If they know theres a better deal with the Nucks than anywhere else, they'll wait. Its like saying, i signed Martin Lapointe cause i didnt wanna wait 10 days for Ovechkin to make a desicion. Gillis is gonna offer me 2 1st rounders for Kovalchuk but he said id have to wait 2 weeks, so i traded him to Anahiem cause they offered me 1 1st rounder now!
The thing is, u think Gillis is on his knees praying to god that Sundin signs, and when hes not on his knees, hes just twiddleling his thumbs waiting till Aug. 1st. But the thing is, and its basically common knowledge, that he has backup plans and hes talkin to other Gm's for the What If scenarios were to occur.

obviously people think there's a chance, or the question would never have been asked.

That's one way of looking at it, or you can say Gillis has a strategy, and he's sticking to it regardless of media pressure.
You never know if Gillis has a backup plan if he loses Sundin. He could have one but just not revealed to media or public because it could potentially effect the chances of Sundin coming to Vancouver. Quote:

If Sundin decides not to play for Vancouver, there is still options available.
Okay, rickster, if you were GM, who would you have picked up?

i dont know what gillis has lost. seriously, who knows? no one does. how many teams are looking to shop players that havent called vancouver because they think they have no interest because the remainder of their cap space is on hold for sundin. why waste a phone call, right? why try to make a deal with someone who, as i put it earlier, has put all their eggs in one basket?
you're right, there are still a ton of options, but every day we wait, those doors close.
dont get me wrong, i think gillis made a point by offering sundin serious cash (as i stated earlier, i was kind of weary with a $10m offer on a 37 year old, but i seperated myself from the money and i will appreciate the deal if it all works out) being aggressive is a good way to make your mark and show that your serious, but i definitely would have thrown down a deadline. i wont get into the details of the moves i'd make because it goes deeper than that as a gm... but i will tell you that if i, as a gm, am going to offer contracts like that to impact players, i'd be throwing in some conditions, especially with regards to timing.

Using your logic Crosby, St. Louis and Zetterberg are all bums and not elite since they were outscored by Malkin, LeCalvier and Datsyuk respectively.

^ why would teams have no interest in dealing with the canucks because of the offer? that makes no sense.. A team, as cliche as it sounds will always be looking to make a trade if it makes themselves better, also teams can be what? 10% over the cap right up until the training camp?
so why would any other GM be scared to deal with the canucks? even with Sundin signing there is still a small portion of cap space available, so if Gillis actually wanted to make a move im sure he wouldnt hesitate to pull the trigger and be over the cap rather then hesitate and worry about the financials, thats what waivers and aqualini's pockets are for.
as i've said before, as it stands now i think Gillis is one step away from Brilliance as his softmore year as a GM, if it does turn out that Sundin comes, i cant see a single educated fan not give him an A+ in terms of effort and rebuilding, regardless of performance on the ice.
