but it's a pretty interesting concept.. according to laurence gillman or w/e his name is, the nucks assistant GM, under the rules you can sign a player to a 30 year deal, of which his salary can be decreased each year up to %20 a year
so in theory you could sign the sedins for 10 years like this:
8 mill
8 mill
6 mill
6 mill
4 mill
4 mill
3 mill
3 mill
3 mill
1 mill
the cap hit would obviously be the average of all those years, but if you stretch it out even further then that, you will have a lower average, please the player in terms of current salary, and eventually be able to dump them off to a team who will take an aging player, OR if they retire, your off the hook for the salary.

Franzen signed an 11 year deal worth $43.5 Mill. Each year the cap hit is $3.95M but it is front end heavy. IIRC, the last year of the deal when he is 41, is only worth $1 M.

Detroit does no wrong....
A bad example of these long term contracts has to be the Islander's signing DiPietro to a 15-year contract that will pay the goaltender $67.5 million. That's $4.5 million a season until 2021, when he will be a few months shy of 40.
Then again, Ovechkin's 13-year, $124 million deal seems to be a good one..
And didn't Richards sign a 12 years $69 million contract?
So ya good and bad...Sedins have already been in the leauge for 9 years..so I dunno....

My only comment towards these long term contracts is that a) look at other professional sports leagues that use a salary cap system and see how those guys are doing it. b) because of the recent economic recession, no one knows what will happen to the cap for the 2010-2011 season as the cap is adjusted based off of the 09-10 revenues.
If the cap stayed the same or continued to go up every year, then these long term deals would look like they are a winner, but if the cap was to drop down to $45M, even teams like Det will be in trouble. This is why a good scouting system is needed so that you can draft well and have good players that are making entry salaries like Pittsburg, Washington, and Chicago.
With this new cap system, gone are the days of dynasties like the late 70's early 80's Islanders and Oilers. Detroit will be the closest one.

I'm another on the Scott Nieds wagon, Jaybo is a great Dman and still has plenty of space to grow but Nieds is established, proven, experienced and brings TRUE leadership qualities ...something I think Jaybo can't quite deliver on.
This is one of the most complete (depth included) Nucks teams we've seen in a while, if we were still building a bit I would take Jaybo but with the team we have now, Nieds 110% for sure.

the thing is though, jaybo is the kind of player you need long term
neids is really only a sundin like deal, a temporary bandage so to speak

Scott should be easier to sign though since he may want to finish his career in his home province. Jaybo is a young ufa and it's certain that teams will throw big money and lengthy contracts his way - who's to say he would choose Vancouver of all places?

We almost have all our pieces in place and we need the final 1 or 2 pieces to put the puzzle together. We essentially have a great team of supporting cast members that lacks the 1 or 2 superstars who are your go to triggers, playmakers or warhorse of a Dman IE Nash, Richards, Crosby, Ovie, Lidstrom, Nieds etc etc. Don't get me wrong, I love the team we have now to death but most people will agree we lack that powerhouse of a forward whom screams "I fucking score goals/make goals happen, just try and stop me" when people think of them.
I think we are a very cup worthy team right now, we're just lacking that little something extra that'll give us that much needed umph.

That's a crazy loophole. Its like Set for Life for athletes. (Like they aren't already but I think many would feel comfort in raking in dough until they're 60)
Say a player worth 7M only feels he has 5 good years left in the tank. Theoretically, a team could sign him for 30 years, pay him the 35M over that time period so 1.17M/yr. I don't know how athletes get taxed but if its like the rest of us poor saps wouldn't they benefit by making less each year?

You just need to make sure you sign the long term contracts before the player turns 35. Once they're 35 then you're automatically on the hook for any salary they are signed for even if they retire.

The buyout takes 2/3's of the remaining salary (say 2 years remaining at 2m and 1m per season, total 3 million), and divides it over the length of the contract (say 8 years), the team would take a cap hit of 0.25 million for the following 8 years.

| Quote: Niedermayer could be interested in the Canucks
With the Vancouver Canucks attention focused on the fates of brothers Henrik and Daniel Sedin, the agent for another set of hockey siblings, Scott and Rob Niedermayer, told the Team 1040 Sports Radio they would be interested in playing for Canada's West Coast club.
The Niedermayers, natives of Cranbrook, BC, are unrestricted free agents once the signing period begins on July 1 and a return home could help provide the Canucks with the first answer to a the laundry list of questions they are facing regarding their roster.
"Before they signed in Anaheim that was definitely a big discussion. But at that time, it was difficult because Rob was in a situation where he was still one year away from being an unrestricted free agent, so he still had a year left to stay in Anaheim,” explained Kevin Epp, who represents both players. “In Scott's case, he was unrestricted, and considered very much playing in Canada for the Canucks or Calgary or somewhere near his off-season home and staying out West. I think everyone dreams of playing near your hometown or in Canada or in British Columbia.”
According to Epp, Scott and Rob will consider all options before making a decision, but with the 2010 Winter Olympics on the horizon, Vancouver is an attractive a destination.
"It obviously depends on the Canucks and their situation and where they're at financially, so they're going to have some decisions from their end,” said Epp. “It depends, too, if Scott's going to play and how that's going to play out, and the Olympics. It's just a little bit of everything for those guys."
Scott is a four-time Stanley Cup Champion, who already owns a Norris and Conn Smythe Trophy, but is undecided if he will continue playing next season. The 35-year old had 14 goals and 59 points this season for the Anaheim Ducks, while making $6.75 million in the final year of his four-year $27 million deal.
His younger brother Rob is 34-years old, and netted 14 goals and 21 points for the Ducks this season, in the final year of a four-year, $8 million contract. Despite the fact the pair played together in Anaheim, there is no guarantee that they will demand to be signed as a package deal heading into the 2009-2010 campaign.
The Canucks just finished inking Steve Bernier to a two-year, $4 million contract, but still need to address the situation with the Sedins who are asking for more than $6 million per year, as well as a slew of restricted free agents like Kyle Wellwood, Shane O'Brien, Rick Rypien and Jannik Hansen. Currently Vancouver has $33.2 million committed to 12 players on next year's roster.

Say 6.5 M for the first 5 years, then 4M, and 3,2,1,1M for the remainder.
Cap hit would be $4.45M per year and the final year they would be 39 years old.
