First everyone's ripping on Gillis because they don't think he's going to "make any big moves" (with no basis for that opinion)... now everyone's pissed off because he HAS made big moves (letting Naslund and Mo go) and they're afraid he might make more.
And yeah, we lost Jovo IN PART because of money... but not through any fault of the Canucks. Wayne Gretzky *WANTED* Jovo in Phoenix and offered him a huge raise to go there - more than the Canucks could realistically afford and arguably more than Jovo was really worth. And besides... if The Great One says, "I want you on my team"... who's going to say no to that? | I heard an interview with Jovo after he signed with Phoenix. He wanted to stay in Vancouver but the Canucks didn't even make him an offer. They didn't want him which is unfortunate although the salary cap played a huge role in that. Saying that, if they really wanted him they would have made it work.

I don't know the exact sequence of events, but I wouldn't be surprised that the Canucks "not making him an offer" was due in part to the fatness of Gretzky's offer... sort of a "we could never match that/he's not worth that much, so why bother" thing.

<SNIP>
i'm saying that people are judging them that way because one is feeding the other and in doing so, they put up 150 points while contributing only 44 goals.
datsyuk and zetterberg put up 189 points with 74 goals. 30 MORE goals in 39 points.
see where i'm coming from? | 05-06, Anson Carter played 81 games and had 33 goals and 22 assists for 55 points.
Daniel played 82 games and had 22 goals and 49 assist for 71 points.
Henrik played 82 games and had 18 goals and 57 assist for 75 points.
Together they had 73 goals and 128 assist for 201 points.
06-07 Daniel played 81 games and had 36 goals and 48 assist for 84 points.
Henrik played 82 games and had 10 goals and 71 assist for 81 points.
Taylor Pyatt played 76 games and had 23 goals and 14 assist for 37 points.
Together they had 69 goals and 133 assist for 202 points.
Breifly looking at this stat, the twins with Anson Carter was a solid #2 line for the Nucks in 2005-2006. For the most part, all the scoring was spread out between the 3. In 2006-2007, the twins played a lot more 1'st line icetime as Morrison and Naslund got demoted to second line. Move onto last season and the twins spent a good part of the season with Pyatt, Linden on the PP, and switched around abit with a few other players including having the twins seperated and playing on two different lines.
Last year, a lot of teams started to understand the twin's cycling and slap pass plays making them less effective. They, for the last few seasons have proven to produce 150 pts plus between the two as second line players, which is quite good. Are they first line players, probably not as good as some of the other first liners, but with a solid player who can play with the twins, I can see them being a threat.
But Pyatt is not a good match for them. I also agree that the twins feed off of each other, but that is a moot point because who doesn't feed off of their linemates? Gretzkey made a lot of average players better because of his ability to see the ice and make the perfect pass. If the twins continue to play the way they do without a good linemate, their cycling and slap pass plays can only take them so far.
To trade them, we would need to find a player who can raise the level of the other players he is to play with, or find 2 other players that can produce 70 pts each and a 3rd player since we are still short a 70 pt man.

Can the other still produce value for the money? If the answer's no, then IMO they're worth a discount from the 75pts for 6.5M. The other players you mentioned have proven they can be split up and still be effective enough.

I don't miss him at all. He was missing way too many games for the amount he was asking for, and honestly, I find the Canucks defense just fine without him now.

i wouldn't consider jovo or bieksa bad at defense. bieksa had a "bad" season last year on account of his being plagued early on by a serious injury and coming back at the wrong time. jovanovski is a rushing defenseman. his career +/- with the canucks negligible and he posted some of his best stats ever while with the team. it was because of his performance here that he got the big contract in phoenix.
iwantaskyline; how do you judge a defenseman's performance on paper? +/-? penalty minutes? goals? points? ice time? i'd say the stat to look for is +/-. and when thinking about the kind of player jovo is, a certain player comes to mind with a very similar game to our friend ed. his name is al iafrate.
dude finished his all star career as a legend. he had a career +/- of -70. does that make him a shitty dman?

I like Jovo a lot too. He was my favorite Canuck of that era but I didn't see a big problem with letting him go when he wanted $7m.

I still don't understand why everyone was so high on Jovanovski anyway. Ohlund and (when he's healthy) Salo are better than he is. Jovocop is just a wannabe Scott Niedermayer, who isn't even as good in his own zone.

i have not once doubted the sedins
hanks number..sorta similar in PROPORTION to that of Joe Thornton...
daniel, someone averaging 30+goals a season while still rackin up 7x pts per season is in my mind, a threat to the other team no matter how "weak", "small" "one system" the sedins play.
so fuck all the critics who dispise of them when they dont register a point a game. it fucking happens.
we are all judging Gillis by the off season, and yes, i've said things such as being ignorant, stupid and honoring past clients, but fact of the matter is, most of it is true. His BOLDEST move aside from the Sundin offer is letting Naslund goto NYR.
but aside of all that, Rookie GM, but has been in around the league long enough to understand how things work, BETTER than 95% of ppl talking on the CDC.
but really now, if the sedins did sign for 6.5mil each, think of the cap hit the team would take. I would like to see them stay, but realistically, drastic changes will need to be done to have enuff room to balance the team http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.p...AN&season=0809
IF the sedins keep their word and go wit this hometown discount they speak of, then the future looks brighter.
some things to consider
If in fact bernier performs as expected, will 2.5mil be enuff to keep him around on 09/10
*knock on wood* if infact the canucks FAIL like most of the bandwagoners are saying, then ohlund/beiksa/salo/edler/kracjek will most likely move to free up space to "justify" rebuilding the team around the twins/lu
Edler and krajeck perform well this season, than do we just let ohlund go for free? we dont know the intentions of either of the players after this season, and the nucks will most likely NOT throw stupid amounts of money towards these two younger guys even if they improve.
and accordng to that site, it looks like a large sum of money is already locked up to less than 5 players excluding the Sedins. is using half the cap space on say 7 players a good move?
ohlund likes the city, salo enjoys the city, the NTC could cause problems.
we have a good solid D core comin up, and ghh..the front line offence dont look too good
im still 100% against the Demitra signing...nothing against him, i tink 3yrs=too long
and it feels like to me taht JP barry and Mike Gillis really dont like each other..
just a gut feeling

Bernier would need to put up at least 50 points for us to pay him more than $2.5m. I hope people don't take the Ryan Malone or Dustin Penner model for salaries.
