Wow there are some pretty bad comments.
I think Ohlund or Mitchell should be the team captain. I think this move is kind of dumb cuz it looks like we're sucking up to Luongo. Pretty lame and obviously he sees right thru this which makes him feel akward and he prob thinks its ridiculous and totally unnecessary.

^ it was said when Gillis first approached Luongo he agreed right away with absolutely no hesitation on the matter
Everyone can speculate as much as they want, but no one knows what goes on in the dressing room, personally as i've said before i think this is the right move for this team.

You are right though, nobody knows what goes on in the dressing room. It should be interesting to see how this pans out.

I dunno.. i really think Lu is way more important to the team as a whole then the majority of fans think
to be a fly on the wall in those dressing rooms..

I've been back and forth with their decision but I think I'm just trying to find an excuse as to why it's a bad move.
I actually think it's a good move in the end. Some fans have made it look like it was a PR move to keep Luongo but I'm sure he wouldn't stay with the team just because he was a "Captain". He's a winner and a competitor and no way is he going to stay here if the team doesn't progress the final 2yrs of his contract and he feels the team isn't going to take any strides to moving closer to a cup.
Besides I believe he's one of the few on the team that's able to criticize himself and his teammates and hold players accountable and at the same time carry his team or make that big save to turn the game around. I'm just a little leary as to how vocal he will be inside the dressing room.

Aside from being pretty obvious it seems like a suck up move by the Canucks
I don't really see whats wrong with naming Lu captain.
Even if Lu was not named captain he would still have a big impact in the changing room.
Whether being named Captain or not should not change how they play the game, especially if they care about the team.
If the player has Captain qualities, say like Mitchell, it will definitely show on the ice and players will respect that and follow his lead even though he doesn't wear the C.
I'm sure many players listened to Trevor even though he doesn't wear the C anymore.

i don't understand how the canucks are getting away with this or if they aren't, why they would even try it. sure, luongo isn't a horrible choice for captain, but it's against nhl rules. i think one of the reasons behind this rule is because it's difficult for a goaltender to relay messages or dispute calls with the refs.

Know the facts.

Not against the rules but I think the NHL preferred that teams wouldn't make goalies captains after Durnan.

then i fail to see the point. luongo is always going to have his presence known and his opinions heard regardless of whether or not he's the captain. we need someone to wear to C to represent us on and off the ice. sure you can delegate the roles to other players, but it's just not the same. luongo is a winner. he doesn't seem like the kinda guy that will stay with us just because we gave him captaincy. we should've given it to someone that we know is willing to be with us for the long haul. then again, i can't speak for luongo, but hasn't he made it clear he only wants to be with a contender?

Assuming there are no other middle-ground plans and it's one extreme or the other, I would suspect Gillis has had a long discussion with Lu and assured him that he wants to build a winning team NOW and keep Lu long-term... and that this move is, as much as anything, a way of demonstrating his commitment to that plan.
Comments from fans and the sports media almost universally approve of this move as well, so this may also be as much Gillis showing his determination to the rest of us, too.
