Classic injury woes hit Canucks in Chi-town
Salo, Rypien, Demitra and Hordichuk sidelined; others also hurting

Chicago captain Jonathan Toews shrugs off Canucks forward Daniel Sedin at United Center on Sunday night.

When the Vancouver Canucks were making additions to their staff this summer, new general manager Mike Gillis probably should have considered a faith healer and a witch doctor.

Normal medical staff just can't seem to get it done for some of the chronics on the Canucks roster and Sunday night the team's two classic injuries waiting to happen happened.

And to run up the tally, Darcy Hordichuk and Pavol Demitra also left the game, the former with a knee, the Slovak centre with what looked like pretty significant damage to his ribs.

As a result, Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood will be recalled from Manitoba today.

The Canucks would have been better off if a couple of Al Capone's guys had come into the dressing room and shot the place up with choppers Sunday night. That way some could have ducked for cover.

After the game, only Roberto Luongo and Alex Burrows were in the dressing room. Many others were strapping on ice bags in the medical room with trainer Mike Burnstein busier than a one-armed paper hanger.

To start at the beginning, Rick Rypien -- who played an unimaginable five straight games to start the season -- isn't injured per se. He left the team after taking part in the morning skate and returned to Vancouver with some sort of viral infection.

Then there's the case of Sami Salo, another participant in the morning skate and an entry in the starting lineup despite the fact he apparently hurt his groin in the warmup.

Taking a spot in that lineup while healthy defencemen Rob Davison and Lawrence Nycholat sat around twiddling their thumbs, Salo made a brief on-ice appearance, then returned to the Canucks dressing room midway through the second shift.

"I thought I could go, but it didn't feel good on the first shift and in the middle of the second I had to leave," said Salo. "I've had a groin injury twice before and they're tricky. But it's very important. It affects everything you do out there. If you can't skate, you can't play."

Hordichuk managed to hurt his knee, causing him to leave the game after playing more than the Sedin twins in the first period, if you can believe the Blackhawks' hilarious time-on-ice stats, and he's likely to be gone seven to 10 days.

"[Colin] Fraser kind of clipped Ryan Johnson and he fell into my knee," said Hordichuk. "I've had these before. I'll probably feel better in a couple of days."

By far the worst of the injuries appeared to be that of Demitra, who seemed to be in considerable pain waiting in the players lounge for the bus to leave for the airport and the flight to Columbus.

"I was just reaching for a puck and all of a sudden I felt an unbelievable pain in my side," said Demitra, whose absence along with the other two had the Canucks recalling Wellwood and Pettinger.

Both players still have to go through recallable waivers and could be lost to the Canucks should someone put in a claim, but the team has lots of cap space and could easily take the half-salary hit should they be claimed.

Pettinger makes $1.1 million and Wellwood $997,500, and if either is claimed the team would be responsible for half their salaries on their cap although they wouldn't be paying the players.

"I've never had anything like this," continued Demitra, holding his sore side. "I'll see how it feels [today]. Then we'll see what happens."

It's becoming increasingly obvious that the only way to keep Rypien and Salo in an NHL lineup for any significant period would be for the league to expand to Europe and put a team in Lourdes. And even then the Virgin Mary would be tearing out her hair.

No doubt both are very frustrated themselves, far more than the team or the Canucks Nation, but it is getting a little ridiculous.

Rypien started the season like he was shot out of a cannon, scoring two goals and turning everyone's head at what he can do on the ice on the rare occasions he's able to play.

But Friday in Buffalo, he just ran around looking for hits he couldn't get to, showing he was not quite right. He tried to tough it out, but what is the point of having a guy with a virus problem hanging around infecting the other guys?

Taylor Pyatt and Daniel Sedin also appear to be playing through leg injuries that are slowing them considerably.

The injury to Salo once again leaves the team with just one right-handed shot on the back end and Kevin Bieksa, playing his first game since returning from a knee tweak of his own, was certainly welcomed back with a heavy workload.

The Chicago time-on-ice stats originally had him listed with 14 minutes in the first period, which couldn't have been right, but "it felt like it," said Bieksa.

"It's actually good that I got a lot of time because sometimes you struggle with your wind coming back and this should make me much better prepared for the game Tuesday night."

There you have it. There's your silver lining.

At least Bertuzzi had a few productive years. So far, Pyatt has been average at best...

from a poster on the canucks forum

"Aquilini should have let Nonis finish his deal with Brunnstrom before they canned him. If Brunnstrom was a bust, the most they would have lost is cash. OP is taking away too much credit from Nonis and giving it to MG.

When MG came in he had everything Nonis didn't have when he first started.
1. capspace, which he isn't even fully utilizing right now.
2. young talent, which Nonis kept and recruited
3. a very solid D core, which Nonis built
4. top Goaltender, which Nonis got.

The fundamentals of the team was built by DN. The only thing MG has done is let people go and make some second class signings and trades. DN's biggest goal this summer was to sign Brunnstrom and a goal scorer. So far its looking alright. Gilis' biggest goal this summer was Sundin and Demitra, Sundin's not coming and Demitra's a play maker."

I'm just posting cause I agree with him

If Canucks are winning games = Gillis is the best GM and thank god we fired Nonis.
If Canucks are losing games = Nonis was the best GM and we should have never fired him.

Nonis did some good by building up a pretty decent team but the man wasn't going to make the changes the Canucks needed badly like getting rid of Naslund and Mo and rebuilding this team. Like it's been said time and time again, the Canucks are in the rebuilding phase. It's going to get much worse before it gets better. We could or should have is in the past, we have to work with the players we have now and give Gillis some time to see what he's capable of.

The problem is that we have to now give Gillis time, where as Nonis has already been given time, as in he was supposed to make the big changes during this summer. Whereas, now with a fresh GM, we can ride on the excuse again. Give him some time, he's new, etc. Only problem is, Luongo doesn't have time. He's most likely going to leave after his contract is up here.

I'm not sure whether Nonis was planning to keep Naslund and Morrison or not. We can't really be sure what his plans would of been.

It's still early in the season, and Canucks are 3-3-0. (only 1 regulation win though.)
Unfortunately, the injury plague has already started... Luongo's been playing no where like he did in his first season as a Canuck. I was actually expecting Demitra to be a bit better. -2 with only 3pts so far. Surprise though, Kesler and Burrows is playing exceptionally well. It covers up the fact that other players are underachieving a tad bit. I really don't know why the hate on Pyatt. I admit I'm one of the haters. But I can't seem to put my finger on why I hate him more this particular season than the previous ones. Maybe the combination that my expection has gone up, and he has done squat.

It's still early in the season, and it would be wrong to make a solid opinion on this team so soon. But realistically, many people thought this team would get destroyed. So far, Canucks aren't doing too bad. For sure, this team is more exciting, faster, and better than the previous year. Canucks can actually come back from being down a goal or two.

On the way of an injury prone season? Lets not jinx it,

Luongo is gonna get swarmed by the media soon enough and hes gonna feel the pressure x10. Let's hope this isn't gonna be de ja vu of the last half of last years season..

your right, but you cant say his skill level is on par with the sedins. which is what i also said and at this moment, he can't catch up to raymond or demitra in either department. i also agree that luongo isn't playing his best, but i never stated that to begin with. i dont start judging till they play a string of 8-10 games.

lol I think Salo has 32 official inuries reported over his career and 1 of them was being bitten by a snake or some shiet. No need for panic yet boys, it has only been 6 games.

Just picked up my Linden tix today and I can't fucking wait. Ok that was off topic but i'm too damn excited.
