I've been to 2 artists, both working at the same shop. I am open to a very select few that are on my wish list, but other than that, I will keep going back to the same shop.

I'd definitely want to have input. The thing about good artists though is that they can take your direction and make it amazing, and it would be their unique artwork.

I have been tattooed by about 8 different artists. Most when i was young and stupid so I wouldn't go back to all but 3. Jeremy Riley - Tattoo Union, and my two current tattooists Jesse Wark - Blackwater, and Ken Greer - Fat City
The main reason I go to a few diff artists is because each artist specializes in something different. Jesse does mostly Japanese black and gray work and Ken does some wicked color.
Some ppl like to collect pieces from different artists and others are loyal to one artist or shop, it really just comes down to personal preference.

Getting a traditional japanese tattoo soon (Cherry blossoms/Hannya mask)
Question though, while it's my first tattoo I don't quite know tattoo etiquette.
There's an artist in japan that tattoos/draws blossoms/hannya mask with a certain style and certain amount of detail that i like, would it be wrong to request for them to be drawn like that, with pictures of the tattoos as a guide? And how accurate could an artist even replicate this kind of style/detail like: |

not at all ,.. but they will change it up some so it's not a copy, no real aritst would rip off someone's work.
and you don't want to be walking around with something ripped off anyways!

(Making an original piece that will continue into a sleeve)

I will probably never have the time or money in my life to go to japan and see him personally, and he could be retired by then.

I will probably never have the time or money in my life to go to japan and see him personally, and he could be retired by then. | take your time, dont rush it. its a life time thing.
I rushed mine when I went back to asia, I knew NOTHING about ink. I was lucky the store I walked into had the artist that did my work, its not the worlds best but it sure opened my eyes to the levels of artists and quality of work compared to local artists.
now, I m not saying local artists arent good, but majority of them dont even know how to draw. they give you a book filled with whole bunch of dragons, kois, phoenix and they just trace it to the transfer paper and slaps it on you.
