Ok I sense a HUGE fail, but what ever.

Is it half decent to get a E71 but no data plan? I'm using a beat up SE W900i and i think its time it retires. I'm on Fido and all I really need is just text messaging and wifi is a plus. Thanks guys.

It's more than halfdecent.

E71 is perfect for what you say you need. Great txtin' phone and wifi is good for surfing if you use Opera. It's not iPhone browsing though. Good to retrieve emails over wifi when needed as well.

is there anything i need to be aware of when purchasing an E71 from craigslist? I saw a few that are "clones" for sale, any way to identify authentic? and Thanks Alphamale for the quick reply.

Hard reset. Turn it off, hold the green, * and 3 keys (in the middle of the keyboard) and turn it on while holding on to those three keys. Release after the country select screen finally pops up.

Just got my E71, unlocked and unbranded, and updated to the latest firmware.

Now, is there a way to install Windows Live and have it sync contacts onto my phone? I can't find the program for it.

The program is called.....Windows Live Messenger.

Seriously.

But I wouldn't do it. It's so annoying as it modifies the Messaging app and throws in weird crap. The contacts aren't quite synced properly to your main phone book. I think. Just don't do it and go Gmail/nuevasync.

Too late. I just spent the last hour manually putting the contacts in using the Nokia PC Suite (which by the way is surprisingly handy!)

Any good applications or mods you would recommend? I installed a theme called JustBlack, and it looks way better than the stock.

Oh, btw, I followed Bell's guide to configure my E71 for it's network, but even so I still get packet data errors. I'm just curious if you know anything about it. I'm going to hit up Bell tomorrow.

I think I'm set for most of what I need... anyone else find any useful apps? I don't have a data plan yet =/ so I find that most of the email apps are useless for me because push email would cost me an arm and a leg?

I just download mine on my computer and use usb to connect to the e71 to install.. pretty quick.

I'm looking to get a gps app too. I've tried to get Garmin XT to work but I could never do it. My signal never locks, could it be because I don't have maps installed yet?? I assume that it would lock even though I don't have maps..

Just spent the last 5 hours swapping the housing. Not sure if it's because my housings were bad, but even though I put it on, there's still a bit of space between the front panel and the body, and the keyboard buttons are "mushy".

Totally not worth the time and shit. Looked and felt better stock :/

A really noobie question, but waht is difference between "dual mode" and gsm?

Should I jsut keep it in dual mode if I jsut have wifi?

Dual mode=3g+gsm if I rmb correctly. I would leave it on gsm since you dont' waste batteries+its quadband so you won't really lose reception.

If you're not going to use data, just use GSM. It'll save you battery life.

Actually, it's better if you leave it in Dual Mode. You'll appreciate it if you go into underground parking lots and concrete buildings. 3G gets better reception and is only a very marginal trade off between using GSM in terms of wide spread and almost guaranteed reception for battery life.

That's official spec from Nokia. Battery life cut in half on talk time if you use 3G.
I never turn on 3G on my E71 and I never lose reception anywhere. E71 has very stong GSM signal IMO.

Talk time:
GSM up to 10 h 30 min
WCDMA up to 4 h 30 min
Standby time:
GSM up to 17 days
WCDMA up to 20 days
WLAN idle up to 6.9 days

I need some help, boys.

If I wanted to replace the keyboard PCB (I fucked up swapping front plates as the hooks fucked up the PCB layering resulting in wonky backlight), which of the following two parts should I get?

I can't open my phone right now, so is the second one the whole top plate minus the LCD? Meanwhile the first is strictly PCB?

I'm under the assumption the whole plate would be easy to replace since I can just stick on the LCD and attached the ribbon cable to the motherboard, but the PCB is a bit cheaper if it's equally as easy to replace.

I'd get JP Cellular to replace it for me, but they'd charge me 75 to replace the PCB, and I'm confident enough to replace it myself for like 15-25 bucks instead.

EDIT: Just realized the second link includes the speaker, which JP replaced for me today for $35... DAMN!!!

its the "North American version" of the E71.

is it worth 230? wtf is NA Version if its locked to Rogers? Will it be an issue Unlocking or using in van?

Of course I will do the basics to check if it works but i just dont wana end up bying a brick phone.

^ NA is North American version which had 850/1900/2100 wcdma for 3G.

It didn't mention anything about locked.... how did you know it's locked?
