Yes maybe your relationship was solely based on sexual activity, but if the word girlfriend/boyfriend was thrown around, it's more then just a "sex-based" relationship. Pure sex based relationships are you two call up eachother when you're bored or horny, you fuck, anywhere, anytime. There's no snuggling, there's no talks about eachothers emotions or weekends, or childhood. Just sex.
Friendly/Game play sex-based relationships are still sex, but you guys might chat about the weather, you guys might hang out, you guys might tell gossip about other friends or family. But you NEVER speak of your emotions or moving forward. Going out doesn't require holding hands, it might include sexual innuendos and slight teasing if in public, but never anything that suggest you guys are a couple.
You my dear, were in a relationship where you talked about your feelings, he will call if you are sick and you and him talk about how you miss one another, even now.

What Girl said, except I don't really agree that there is no affection or intimacy in a 'fuck-buddy' relationship. It's an understanding that for whatever reason, a fuck-buddy relationship will not become a monogamous partner-based relationship.
It is pretty clear that you still miss him and you are still feeling some emotional pain since the "break-up." Like a drug, seeing him makes you happy, and for the moment takes the pain away. You also think that there is a chance that he might see something in you that he totally missed the first time around and then give you what you want - a real relationship. I'm here to tell you, it rarely works that way! You're going to get even more hurt when he leaves you for someone else.
Best thing you can do is learn from the mistakes you made in past relationships, keep working on improving yourself and leave that sucker behind. The less contact you have with him, the easier it all becomes. You said yourself that you thought you were doing fine until you spoke to him on the phone again....see how this works?

Funny thing is, I don't think I made any mistakes (well okay, other than being a girl and letting my emotions run away with me -- thanks for that). But I certainly did learn that some guys just shouldn't be in relationships. Given how easily I toss the word love around, I'm surprised that scared him really.

I truly believe there's 2 types of fuck-buddies and it really just depends on the guy and the situation of the matter. If you were in more of a Friendly/Game play fuck buddy situation, there would probably be more affection and intimacy prior or after the actual sex part, but there are situations where 2 people just come together to have sex.
Other then that I agree 100% with what Marco says, you have to stop talking to him for a while Inaii and don't go jumping on the sex rebound train, you'll either do something regretful or you'll get your feelings hurt. He's the guy that left you the first time because he had "no-time." Then he tells you it was because he couldn't commit. I mean, stellar excuses, really.

i text you while i'm working last night and you ask me to stop by. i stop by and visit you and your best friend for a bit. you ask the best friend what him and his gf are doing that night and invite me over to his house to hang out and watch a movie, i say sure. i have to head back to work because i'm off in 15 mins so i tell you to call or text me. i never heard from you at all last night. i'm not mad that we didn't hang out, i'm mad because you didn't have the courtesy to text me at least to say we weren't going to be hang out.
