If you like paperS and analysis then Phil courses wouldn't be a problem for you

Alphamale 07-21-2010 12:53 PM

What the heck does phil xx1 have to do with papers? Analysis? Only in the most lenient sense.

Phil xx1 is something you either get or you don't. You're gonna get raped or do decent. It's not hard but it's not easy, lol.

It's hard to say how you will do but if it's a pre-req you don't really have a choice, or you can take Phil 120 (which is the other one, I think you can take if you're doing BBA). I've never taken Phil 120, so I have no comment.

Did you take it? Who was your prof? How were the assignments and what should I expect to do? I consider myself a critical thinker when it comes to making wise decisions, will that help me in any way, shape, or form in this class?

G 07-21-2010 05:33 PM

Fuck, no open classes. Boned again. Thanks SFU.

i don't recommend it at all. like alpha said, you either get it or you don't. personally i didn't get it and even when i went to the ta's office hours, i still didn't get it at all. the work is pretty minimal and there is pretty much a chapter a week which was like less than 15 pages usually if i remember correctly. i had peter horban and pretty much the midterms were 50 minutes and didn't allow you time to check or read over. basically write down shit as fast as you can and hope for the best. class average hovered around 50% if i remember correctly for the mt's and finals before scaling.

(Edit: Nevermind hahaha I was in the morning at 10:30am in Surrey)

Must. Finish. Courses.

So who's driving up to BBY SFU this Fall semester? :) Lolz I might spot some of you hahaha.

The other guy pretty much said everything.

It seems as though P. Horban teaches it every semester (almost) so it will be difficult to avoid him. He was also my prof, as well. Assignments are light and easy, as is the reading material assigned. Like I said before (and others have commented) you either get it or you don't, even if you study your ass off.

I consider myself relatively analytical and others have commented the same. I did piss poor in that class. I actually thought I could have done better since I figured the material really wasn't that hard such that I RE-TOOK the class, thinking this time it would be a breeze (same prof, same curric, everything). I studied harder this time around, without a doubt. I went from a C to a C+, LOL. Talk about a wasted re-take.

I hope that helps. Your gonna get fucked or you're gonna fuck it. Good luck. FYI, assignments and reading, although similar, have dick all to do with the exams (that's how I felt when I got my marks back, hahahaha).

The_AK 07-21-2010 07:33 PM

So what DID make the exams so difficult? :S What kind of questions did they ask? Multiple choice? Written?

edit*

hell with it, not taking phil xx1 (vowed to never take a phil course again after I took phil 110 with jill mcintosh; I must not break my word), taking Bus 272 with Christopher Zatzick instead (need to bring up my gpa, phil xx1 doesn't sound like a course that would allow me to do so)

both actually, tuesday and thursday will be in surrey

Vinny G 07-22-2010 08:39 AM

I'd say Phil XX1 is almost similar to a math or comp sci class. The work is heavily syntax-based (best way I can describe it) and you basically turn things like "If P, then Q" into real statements. It sounds easy but it's way harder than it looks. It was probably the worst class in my lower division even though I got like a B- or B.

To be honest, I wouldn't take any Phil courses unless you have to. I've taken XX1 and the one about morals or something (120?) and they were both useless and stupid.

I'll be driving up if I can ever get my car to keep running lol.

Splmash 07-22-2010 07:05 PM

I'm thinking of finding a couple people to car pool with. Since gas and parking is a bitchhhh.

We can take turns driving or something.
