^ eng 101? hopefully i get in that too

I've been looking into all the WQB requirements and Major requirements... what are some examples of general studies courses? I need 4 English/Gen Studs course. I have 2 english already, but I'd like stray away from ENG...

sas 07-29-2010 12:09 AM

I've already taken it along with some other POL courses. You will cover the usual capitalist, marx, realism, rationalism frameworks.

I would take it over English any day. Less reading, less writing and easier to BS. And if you have any economic background, even easier.

And Math 157 is another easy course.

**Also like someone also stated, Mike Johnson is the fuckin' best instructor. I rarely go to school but I attended all his lectures in Buec 232 and the 336. He is informative and helfpul. Dude has a hilarious stats helpline. Don't buy the book though, his notes were adequate for me**

And Lawrence Boland is the only Econ prof I can endorse. Myers was decent, avoid Christoph.

How hard is CMPT 120 for someone with no programming/computer background?

The course isn't hard for someone with no programming/computing background... the problem is, tonnes of people who do take it have some programming background so it's super super easy for them, so you end up with a bimodal distribution.

It's not that hard, but because of that, don't count on too much scaling.

^ Spoken from experience with CMPT 128.

So would it usually be marked on a curve with like high averages and in the end I'll get raped?

No, the profs usually know what's up. Our class had a whole smattering of A's and A+'s because of that.

i didn't like python. the course is difficult if you aren't able to think with logic about the problems. like said before, there are 2 groups. the ones who get it (and get the a's) and then u got the the rest which is the c and b range which have to work hard by staying at labs and trying to get as much help as possible. i was the latter. if you have a choice, go with cmpt 165 as there's less python and more web page building and since its a pretty good gpa booster (just dont go distance ed).

just did a random search and came up with july 31st at 12 am for iat, so it should probably be the same for all other surrey reserves

which class is it for anyways?

carsncars 07-30-2010 06:53 AM

Hey I've never really waitlisted before... how does this work? I'm position 1 for the tutorial but position 85 for the lecture--if someone drops out of the tutorial I'm waitlisted for, will I get the spot in the tutorial and the lecture? Or will I have to wait for 84 more people to drop out... I'm guessing the first one because that makes more sense, but then this is SFU and SFU doesn't always make sense. :P

You'll need a spot in the lecture to be considered as registered in the course. So, even if you get the tutorial, the system probably won't let you register in it because you don't have a spot in the lecture.. Hence, you'll need to wait for 84 people to drop out before you can get in the class.

Just a note, I'm surprised at how much the waitlist capacity takes... usually it's just around 50 spots.

Man so if someone drops out of my tutorial, I'll get the tutorial position but someone else (who doesn't have a tutorial position) will get the lecture position, and we'll both still be waitlist? That sucks...

c3m 07-30-2010 10:23 AM

^
you should be more concern getting into the Lecture than tutorial right now
you can just ask the TA to see if you can go into certain tutorial time after you get enrolled in the class

1) you can't get a lecture position until you get a tutorial position

2) is the lecture full? because sometimes it gives you a waitlist for lecture just because your tutorial is full, but if your lecture isn't full yet and you get into your tutorial, you will get into the lecture

hope that helps!

i was waitlisted for kin 140 for this term. i believe both the lecture and the tutorial was being waitlisted. when i checked, i got into the tutorial and i had gotten into the lecture. i emailed some advisors about the waitlist thing, if i remember correctly, their answer was if you get into the tutorial, you automatically get into the lecture. correct me if i'm wrong, but i think that's most cases for a lot of classes.

Yeah this was what I just confirmed with an advisor. Because if someone drops out of my tutorial, then they logically would also have dropped out of the lecture too--but since everyone in front of me for the lecture are still on waitlists for other tutorials, they can't enroll and I get the spot.

wuuhoo 07-30-2010 12:57 PM

im probably sur that once you get in a tutorial , you are in lecture as well. If not you can always talk to the professor/advisor and they will sqeeze you in.

I was waitlisted for kin 140 this semester. lecture spot #58 and like #7 for my tutorial. Got in my tutorial the next day, and got an email stating that I was accepted into the class.

Tutorial was on a fri , 2 hrs after lecture, so I dropped it :D

@gnat : yeah waiting for eng 101 too I guess. Nothing else to take? Will you be taking it as well?

carsncars 07-30-2010 01:00 PM

On another note, the prof squeezed me in to MBB 222--"Class capacity 20, Total enrolled 21". I sort of feel bad because I basically just budged in front of the waitlist... but not bad enough that I won't take the spot. :D

wuuhoo 07-30-2010 01:16 PM

ehh not your fault. They didnt bother asking the prof

I'm in that kin tut!!! LOL should have stuck with it! :P
Anyway, yeah I am...if I can get it. The tutorial times are so crappy right now though...: /

I took it last summer, not distance ed. though. Gives you some good pointers on writing papers and stuff in the future. Lots of writing ie. analyzing papers, writing essays, so have fun with that :D
