Jgresch 11-25-2010 09:53 AM

I selected my courses yesterday, I ended up taking cmpt 120... I have no background with computing coding and crap, am I totally fucked for this course?

jtanner_ 11-25-2010 09:59 AM

^ No, I wouldn't say so if you're somewhat computer literate and can pick up on things easily.

Maybe consider taking visual basic (110 i believe) instead if you're just using it as a GPA booster, python can be tricky for beginners who have trouble familiarizing themselves with the code language

Vinny G 11-25-2010 10:01 AM

it can be hard if you don't really understand things like math. everything's very .... structured. i got an A- in that course with no coding experience (I was a business student) but I am more technically inclined than most.

jtanner_ 11-25-2010 10:03 AM

Math? I wouldn't say you need any sort of strong math background for cmpt... but I think I understand what you're getting at. You need to be able to look at say a script of code and understanding what runs when and how rearranging code changes what happens etcetc.

Jgre~ you going to class today? lol

Donut is! Donut is!

^ LOL. Aight maybe i'll come sit with you...

Have you guys been studying? I'm honestly still only around chapters 4-6...

So our final only goes from Chapters 1-16 (excluding 9 and 12?)

Hm.. It's honestly pretty hard to say with how unreliable (imo at least) the weather network is.

It says that by the evening/overnight it'll just be pouring on the mountain.

I've been here since ~9 am and have watched the snow fall get wild and die down in such a short amount of time.

Jgresch 11-25-2010 11:07 AM

Thx for feedback guys, I'm fine at math usually.

Is coding just like writing codes for webpages? I'm sort of familular with basic html, is that gonna help me? lol

Jtan I'm not going to class, maple ridge is pretty brutal for snow. FF civic with bald summer tires isn't my idea of fun.

jtanner_ 11-25-2010 11:12 AM

^

Coding in python I wouldn't say is very similar to webpages as a python script generally runs in a sequential order... but I would say a background in encoding for web pages would be beneficial.

Lol ff civic with bald tires ftw!

Jgresch 11-25-2010 11:18 AM

Is it bad that I don't know wtf python script is lol

jtanner_ 11-25-2010 11:20 AM

^ No lol. Who's your prof? Brad Bart?

Python is just some freeware open source programming language that's used for like... very basic programming.

Should I buy a laptop for this course lol... my current laptop suckssss

jtanner_ 11-25-2010 12:02 PM

^ You want to buy a laptop... just for this course?

Haha if your current laptop is genuinely outdated and you're financially stable whats to stop you from buying something you want?

I don't think you'd need to buy a laptop for this though haha.

Taking cmpt you'll also get access to the CSIL labs to do work lol.

Jgresch 11-25-2010 12:04 PM

oh okay, I was wondering if I needed my own computer for it....

I would have used the class as an excuse to update lol

Datsun 11-25-2010 12:11 PM

boxing day sales coming up...just a thought. ;)

Jgresch 11-25-2010 12:23 PM
