yeah I didn't think they would be an easy gpa booster but I'm pretty much Shit out of luck with my C+ in English from langara because that's a C at SFU so I figured if I could maybe fluke out a B in one of the PHIL courses it would help a lot, I already took Knowledge and Reality and it was brutal, I did end up getting an A- at Langara though so that's pretty much why I figured I had a better shot than retaking an English course at SFU though I will keep that option open as well, thanks for the insight though I really appreciate it.

I find that, if you put in the effort to go to office hours and get to know your prof/TA, you'll do really well in English classes. I didn't really go to office hours in ENGL 105W, but managed a B+. I went to many office hours and got to know my prof pretty well for ENGL 102W, and I got an A, even though it was harder than 105. Then again, I've always done pretty well in English classes, so that probably helped.

I need to take Econ 301 and Buec 333 some time next year. I've heard from my friends they're tough classes and lots fail them.

Which profs would you recommend - McGee, Barkin, Boichev, Luelfesmann, Fu for 301; Rekkas, Woodcock, Pendakur, Ngimkieu for 333? Are any of them easy or can they teach at least half decently? Can I trust ratemyprofessor for these profs? Thanks.

301 - take mcgee (easy exams, teaches both numerical and theoretical part of the course well with great examples, nice guy, beastly beard)
333 - take rekkas or woodcock. avoid pendakur. infact after the whole 333 situation in spring with the petition and complaints from students, i doubt he'll be allowed to teach 333 again...but you never know

Avoid Barkin at all costs. Luelfesmann is not bad, I had him the 2nd time around and I thought it was reasonable.

Woodcock is good for 333, I'm taking it with Ngimkieu right now. If you can study Ngimkieu is good, he reuses the exams from Woodcock.

For 301, Mcgee for sure, Luelfesmann is alright if Mcgee isn't available.
For 333, anyone but Pendakur

301 with Mcgee - easy exams.
I took 333 with Woodcock - he follows the powerpoints really closely so lecture is boring but the exams are easy.

Thanks all for the tips. My registration is kind of late and I am sure McGee's class will fill up. Last Spring most 3rd year students were fucked 'cause it got full and had to take 301 with Barkin.

Has anyone taken 301 with Boichev or Fu?

I had 301 with boichev, nice guy good proff. He gave us incentives to do well, like a free 10% in which the questions to that quiz were pre-given. the MT's were like his assignments but the FINAL.. uhh that was a different story. He first said the class was not going to be curved, the final average was forty something and that was worth 50% of your mark.

So everyone basically shat their pants, But the guys awesome and curved it.
Overall he was a good proff, but has immense pressure from the department * ANKE* to make it hard for 301. If he didnt everyone in the class wouldve passed,

The head in Econ really has some issues to deal with.. Whats the point of setting a cut of to fail people.

Georgi is good, and will be better since he now has seniority

BUS 336 exam tomorrow morning. As if I wasn't already annoyed that it's on a Saturday morning at the opposite campus from where I'm taking the class, nothing is sticking in my head except for the basics. I'm gonna be slaughtered by the written section.

If English isn't my thing, would you recommend PHIL 001-3 Critical Thinking over PHIL 100 and 120? Also, how is ENGL 199 Introduction to University Writing compared to the other first year English courses?

Engl 199 is hard, but useful.

I don't really know. I'm going by what friends have said, I haven't taken any PHIL classes.

And ENGL 199 is supposed to be the hardest 100-level English class, but as mentioned, it's supposed to be incredibly useful. I took ENGL 102 and ENGL 105.

+1 on ENGL 199 "hard but useful". My section (distance ed) had just one A and one A-, but I'm sure it helped me out in other courses. Also, like most 100-level English classes, if all you want is a B/B+ it's not hard to get.

Contrary to what everyone here thinks, I thought ENGL 199 was easy. It was 1-2 hour a week of readings and some online discussion for an easy B. Obviously if you want something more than a B you have to work harder, but the workload was light and concepts easy to understand. I'd definitely take it over PHIL XX1.

PHIL XX1 is very abstract, if you get it, cool, if you don't, you will want to die because absolutely nothing will make sense to you. On the good side, no writing for that class.
