^ try to find them on craigslist, facebook etc, much cheaper than what the bookstore price is.

mc. 08-17-2011 01:48 PM

some classes you wont even need them as the lecture notes are usually sufficient.

wuuhoo 08-17-2011 02:56 PM

Never ever buy bookstore unless you really have to. Look at the course outline and see if you needed, or just ask the professor if you can use an old ed.

Anyways, I am finally done. Summer starts woot !

RacingMetro92 08-17-2011 02:56 PM

I'm taking CMNS 110...at Surrey:okay:

And as for being on a waitlist, should I just buy the books now and hope to get in? or wait until I'm actually in the course?

Says that the earliest date the funds can be deposited is Sept 6th when I checked my loan status online, so probably during first week of school sometime. :)

Ive applied for student loans, you first send them the signed agreement for loan, then you would recieve the quote of the canada and bc loans, then you go cash it in a bank.

QUESTION:

If you guy's fail an elective, would you retake that elective and clear your old mark, or would you take another elective and leave the F?
I'm think whether to retake the course or not, but the course was a physics course :/

PB10 08-17-2011 08:46 PM

Quick question:

I've retaken a course that I previously got a F on, does the better mark replaces the F completely? I just receive the mark, but my cumulative GPA remains the same.

The better of the two marks is replaced.

Be patient, it'll change once the system figures it out.

G 08-17-2011 11:58 PM

So if you retake the course you get an F on, your F is taken off transcript? or is it still on there?

At SFU you can retake a failed class 5 times, and the failed mark will be replaced with your new mark. When you transfer or apply to another school, both grades will be visible, and depending on the school, they'll take the higher grade, or average both. UBC will average both.

alright so the reality of me having to start Math 157 in about 3 weeks is starting to kick me in the face now lol, do you guys have any recommendations or tips on learning and understanding the material? I was never a strong math student, I barely made the minimum to take the course (76) so any help would be greatly appreciated

G 08-19-2011 07:40 AM

Math 157 is pretty easy. Just remember to do your homework, and if you need help, go to the workshops.

I struggled with 157 myself. Looking back, it wouldn't have been as bad if I tried harder, but just remember to do all of the homework, take advantage of the Calculus workshop, attend every lecture, and find a group of people you can work with. Having friends in that class was a lifesaver for me.

I took Econ 102 with Vera Lantinova, and I'm guessing there's a good chance it's the same prof for your course. She may be a nice person, but she spoke very softly, and had a strong accent.

Is that why the class did so badly?

yeah, I think he means vera latinova too. i thought she'd be gone by now because people probably would have complained. i nailed 90ish for my midterm and still ended up with a C for final grade. Apparently in the e-mail she sent out, a lot of people failed the final and thus failed the course. This was Econ 102, a first year class, and I had gotten a B for both econ 103 n 105 already thinking beforehand I could coast through the course :fuuuuu:

How long does it usually take to find out what books we need to buy for our courses?

Are ebooks readily available for most of the books needed?

Also when would we be getting student cards and go passes? This is my first year at SFU lol

wuuhoo 08-20-2011 01:12 AM

for books: mysfu.ca and go through the book requirement tab. I personally would wait on it until maybe the first week of classes so the professor can tell you what is required or not. Or email the professor first

Upass I think are ready on the 25th for pickup

Anyways, anyone know an easy course thats available on wed? I want one more course but nothing seems to interest me and is on a wed as well

Anyone take ARCH 100? Is it ok to use the old text, the one they used last term? Canadian ed, but I don't think it was the 2nd Canadian ed.

Unless you know 100% you are going to buy the book, wait until after the first week of class to decide. Anything with alot of assigned readings or assigned questions out of the text will be easier with the book. In this case go up on the 31st/1st and buy them, there will be a better selection of used.

Check the Torrents. Also check for international copies on eBay/Amazon, much cheaper.

After the 25th. The first week is going to have insane lineups, so if you value your time and take transit I would suggest also getting this done on the 31st/1st.
