ahh I said it before I'll say it again, the last 2-3 days before a final can determine how successful you'll be in that class. Studied my ass off for 2 days straight, pulled an all nighter night before exam and I'm so happy i did. Was worth it

Who's doing Comp Sci or finished comp sci at sfu? Want to give some input or insight? Thinking about maybe switching majors since it seems like there are so many more jobs in cmpt and much more possibilities.

^+1 its really hard work and the assignments are really time consuming and frustrating to do at times..

I took comp sci courses in my first semester and I was like . Now I have no clue what I'm going to major in.. I want to do business but I'm not motivated to pull off a 3.2 gpa..
Take Cmpt 120 first and decide from there. Good luck

120 is a cakewalk compared to everything you'll encounter.
Take MACM 101 or CMPT 150 to get an idea of how bullshit it is lol

What are the job opportunities afterwards? What exactly do you learn in cmpt 120, 150, macm? I've seen you guys post that you're asses are getting bruised up but not actual material about it, so kinda curious.

CMPT 120 is basic programming language. Structures, general practices, and some theory. Really easy IMO

CMPT 150 is a lot tougher. It focuses more on the logic of computers.

MACM 101... I don't even know. I got 39% in it... Still left with a C-. It's different now.

3rd year comp sci here.

Courses are TOUGH. time consuming and takes effort. You also need to do your own studying as most prof in the 2nd year will not teach you how to code in different languages. What they usually lecture about in class is theory and more theory. You basically have to learn to apply it through assignments which is basically all coding.

You're basically going to stare at computers screens for your entire life.

Comp Sci is actually one of the top 5 jobs out there ( depends which concentration) at the moment with so many new developing things like cloud computer and App development. It feels like the field will never slow down as technology will always grow and the industry will need more and more programmer/engineers. I assume your in ECON major right now? Econ isn't too bad, but i heard its a hard major to get a decent paying job after grad(unless you try to get a gov job).

I would suggest taking CMPT 125 to get the gist of programming. You will not learn anything related to comp sci in macm 101, that is just logical thinking, which is useful later on. CMPT 125 is C++/Java programming ( depends on prof). DO NOT take CMPT 120, it is useless in learning what comp sci is about. That class is a joke. As for CMPT 150, its basically the logical theory of hardware components.

How did you find the math in Finance? Because that would be considered baby math or not really math in Comp Sci.

I guess you really have to love computers and coding or math to do well in CS. If the quantitative level of business is 1, CS will be level 10.

There are tons of job opportunities for Comp Sci graduates.. but programming is dreadful. All the debugging would make you want to shoot yourself.
