I did my b-hum in hum103 - invention of the book.

If you take it with Paul Dutton, it's incredibly easy :P

You'd wanna look at the graduation requirements. http://www.cmns.sfu.ca/wp-content/up...mns_major2.pdf It's not mandatory to follow the exact order of courses(though some courses will require other courses as a prerequisite/corequisite), but you still need to complete them.

For your W electives you're allowed to take 3 credits of 100 or 200 level courses and 3 credits of 300 or 400 level courses. Info on W courses are located here: Writing - Curriculum Initiative - Simon Fraser University. There's also a link on the bottom of the page to all of the courses that satisfy a W credit.
Q courses are just quantitative thinking courses. There're a shit load of these. Refer to this: Quantitative - Curriculum Initiative - Simon Fraser University
For your breadth courses refer to this: Breadth - Curriculum Initiative - Simon Fraser University

About to do LPI..does anyone know if I need 50% on each section to pass it or is it 50% in total of all sections combined? It doesn't really
say it clearly on the sfu website. It just says "a minimum of 50% in all sections to pass".

Anyone know if SFU policy allows profs to change the exam date to be held on the last day of class even though there is a specified exam date according to the the final exam schedule provided on the SFU web site (link below)?

Profs frequently do that. Some see no need to postpone the exam for 1-2 weeks. My 374 prof did that for my class (and the past 5+ semesters he's been at SFU).

I'm losing interest in computer science. Started my 3rd year this semester, but I have no motivation to do homework and learn programming anymore(its not the weather!). Considering changing faculties or maybe transfer to BCIT (different major).

Any thought? If i do transfer, i basically wasted 2 years of my career

No motivation to do homework? You're human. Who actually likes doing questions from a textbook?

I can't help you to find motivation to learn programming other than to just take things at an applied level. Take a stack of cards and play around with sorting algorithms.. find a fun way that sorts them. Create something that makes someone in your households' life easier. I can make things for myself, but if I make someone elses' life much easier the feeling is 10x better. Being a programmer makes you a magician: you take words and pull a rabbit out of a hat after compiling them. Code in your favourite language. Learn javascript, php, ruby, etc.

What 3rd year compsci courses are you taking this sem? After looking at the higher level compsci courses, they look to focus on theory than actual programming. The only programming intensive ones look like cmpt 300 and 307 and all of the ones listed in the multimedia specialization.

^ taking cmpt 300 and 354.

CMPT300 is all theory in lecture and assignments are coding intensive. I basically have to spend countless hours research on how to code correctly in order to finish my assignments.

354 is theory class with coding/theory assignments. This class isn't as bad as 300.

All in all, i'm still losing interest because its tedious. I use to like programming cuz its like solving a puzzle, but now its just tedious and i feel like i'm starting to dislike it.

Yeah SFU Comp Sci focuses a lot on theories. Did you guys take CMPT 275 recently? What project did your class do?

Try to get a coop/internship/part-time position within your industry. I landed a position in the IS department of a company this summer (although I study acct/finance), and I have to say that it has greatly increased my interest in doing compsci/MIS/IS. I took MIS (BUs 237) last year and absolutely hated the class because the material was dry and it was essentially memorizing a bunch of vocabulary I had no interest in. After working at in the IS dept, I started to actually understand wtf I was learning the whole time back in school and the pieces of the puzzle all seemed to fit and make sense. Same thing happened last year when I did an 8 month accounting co-op and I was able to see a lot of the concepts/lessons learned in class being exemplified in the work place.

Not sure if you know this or not, but maybe try taking a look at IT consulting (implementation). It's a lot about problem solving and I have found it to be quite interesting. The industry is quite strong and there are a lot of companies hiring for these positions.

Thanks for your opinions. I'm planning to take co-op within the next two semesters.

I already did CMPT275. I did a voting tabulating system program. I wished i was assigned to make an iphone app =/

Starting my SFU Criminology journey this fall... I'm so excited

Just finished choosing my courses today...
I hate how all my required courses end up being on a Tuesday and there's no other timeslots available to choose from

Does anybody have any tips/insight on how I should prepare for my transition from highschool to university? I'm a bit nervous with everyone telling me it's difficult during the first couple semesters.

That's exactly how I felt during my first and second year of computer science. But once I started the 300 level courses, I started to enjoy it much more. Courses in the first two years are much more about the foundation, hence can be a bit dry. Upper level courses are more enjoyable (for me at the least) because they are about specific topics such as networking, operating systems, graphics etc... so you can become more immersed in something you enjoy vs taking a course because it is a requirement.

Also, since you are in your 3rd year, it might be a good idea to look into coop and see how the industry is like. Working in the industry and learning all the theories and stuff in school is much much different. You might come to like computing science.

I dunno, thats just my take on it.=] Hope it helps
