I'm going to go on a tangent here, but bear with me.

This is a message that is lost on a lot of international students. Their parents force them into law, medicine, engineering, etc because "you can get a good job and make a lot of money."

I think it's partially due to prestige--you can brag to your friends in Asia that your son got into UBC Pharmacy or UBC Law. But also, there's filial piety to consider. Here in the west, we kick out the kid at 18; you're free and independent and you can do whatever you want. But in Confucian cultures, the kids are responsible for taking care of their every one of their ancestors. So, it makes sense that money would override passion or interests. This happens in Persian, South Asian and Arab (the major immigrant groups in Vancouver area colleges) cultures as well.

A lot of students can't take the pressure, and suicide among immigrant youth (especially in the highly competitive environments of East Asia) has been widely publicized. It also contributes to a shortage in skilled labour--many immigrant families would recoil in horror at the thought of their kid working as a roughneck up north.

First time seeing the president of SFU in person with a VP of some sort. Anybody know where the president's office is or higher ranking people's parking lot is?

vyrospec 03-25-2014 03:07 PM

^ Look for Strand Hall, not sure where they park though, probably anywhere with a godly parking pass of some sort

v_tec 03-25-2014 03:57 PM

Maybe Lot E, where it's closest to the Strand Hall?

BrRsn 03-25-2014 04:06 PM

Yeah it depends -- a lot of profs have reserve spots in Convo mall (1st/2nd level). A lot of reserve spots next to blusson hall as well (I guess that's E lot?).

Anyone here transfer to SFU from Langara and know if I need both Bio 1115 AND Bio 1215 to get credit at SFU?

Or can I just take Bio 1115 here and take the Bio 1215 equivalent at SFU?

BrRsn 03-25-2014 05:57 PM

^ Syllabus for BISC 102 and BISC 101 at SFU:

http://www.sfu.ca/biology/courses/ou...1/101_1131.pdf

http://www.sfu.ca/biology/courses/ou...1/102_1141.pdf

as long as the topics match up from your bio 1115 class to one of the above, i don't see why it wouldn't count.

If you have time please sign this petition for the ban of styrofoam foodware from restaurants, food vendors, and retailers at SFU.
Quote:

Since adding multistream waste bins at SFU, the un-sustainable volume of polystyrene (styrofoam) food containers, cups, lids and other service ware is clearer than ever.

Implementing a ban is important because polystyrene is:

- a non-renewable product made from fossil fuel
- known to leach toxic substances such as styrene and benzyne which are potential carcinogens and neurotoxins
- at best "sparingly biodegradable." Our best guess is it will take thousands of years to breakdown
- already banned at other institutions like the University of Calgary.

SFU has commited to diverting a minimum of 70% of waste from landfills by the end of 2015. Banning polystyrene food service items would have a significant impact on our landfill stream. If we hope to become a zero waste campus, prohibiting the use of polystyrene in food service is essential.

Lol all my exams are on the last 2 days of the exam schedule. fml.

anxiety 04-03-2014 02:27 PM

we complain when the exams are near the very end of the exam period for torturing us for so long, then we complain about exams on the first or 2nd day for not having enough time to study. Haha I'd rather have exams on the last few days to have more time to study.

BrRsn 04-03-2014 05:15 PM

All my exams are next week, fucking fourth year classes.

Then I'm going on a trip, coming back and writing my last exam on the 24th
GG schedule :okay:

Sidenote, fucks given this semester: 0
