does anyone know if arch 131 with dennis sandgathe is marked on a curve? If so, if I'm 15-20% below average, what mark will I get? |

^ he is correct, depending on the department whatever the 'average mark' should be is set, and standard deviations in either directions define the rest of the marks. But uhh ... 15-20% below average I'm not sure if you'll get a B -- I was in his class in the summer and it was hard for a 1xx arch class. I'd imagine you're on the cusp of a C+/B- |
^good then, I always thought right below average is a C+ and above average is B-. I'm like 15% below average so I suppose anywhere from C to C+. I will take it not too shabby. Average for the mt 1 is 65% and mt 2 78%. I'm sitting at 65% going into the final, doubt I will do well on the final since I didn't go to class for the last two weeks to take notes. I'd be happy to just pass the final. |
For parking on weekends at SFU, it says that hourly rate is 3.25 and max is 6.50. Does that mean if I go up early (i.e., 2pm), I can park the entire day for 6.50? |
yea I believe so $6.5 is for the whole day |
If I remember correctly, Arch 131 (with Sandegathe) is not marked on a curve. There should be a list of the grades on his syllabus, so you can actually calculate what you need on final to get ___ final grade. The final for Arch 131 was pretty tricky, study hard! |
^ I searched around on canvas, I didn't find any grading key, but when I searched on google, I found that on pg 455 here, someone asked exact same question back then in 2012 and they had the grading key in the course folder. 81% was a A- |
Good luck on all of your finals homies. |
Anyone remember if Nabyl did any scaling for the CHEM281 final? And do you remember if the exam was based off of new material of an equal blend of the older stuff? Going in with ~ 70%, but absolutely clueless about Spectroscopy :okay: Thanks |
I like your username, that was totally how I felt about Ochem in second year...Can't help you about the exam content, but good luck man! |

my 281 final, there was a few minor points on the earlier stuff (i.e. naming, chirality, picking the most basic hydrogen/the most acidic, drawing different resonance structures, etc.) and a large proportion on the newer stuff synthesis reactions (282 final was all synthesis type questions) etc. NMR / IR was on the final exam and it is not unlikely that he will give you the chemical equation, the IR, the NMR (and no IR/NMR tables so you must memorize) and he'll ask you to draw the structure. A large portion of my class screwed this up beautifully. It's usually a fairly simple benzene-based structure, so just look for characteristic splitting patterns in the hydrogens which will tell you the symmetry, if there is any (there usually is since it is usually benzene based). Oh, and keep your SN1/SN2/E1/E2 chemistry memorized inside and out, know the chirality/sterics/backside vs. front side attack for all of those, and know which conditions favor which. There was also a question on my 281 final about thermodynamic vs. kinetic product, which conditions favor which, why, etc. There's lots of good videos on youtube (especially by freelanceteach) that go thru ochem 1 and 2 step-by-step. Good luck! EDIT: Oh, also memorize any reactions he specifically mentioned in class as being the "only way to get XX product" -- The names/reactants are escaping me now, but there was only one reactions used only to get a C-terminal alcohol, another reaction on my 281 final required the use of an epoxide as a reagent, which screwed up a lot of people |
oh lawd, I remember in the 286 lab, my partners water line hose got loose, and I got suddenly sprayed in the face...my first reaction was, holy fuck, acid in my face lol...scariest few seconds ever |

I work in a micro lab and I'm hoping to work with Shigella; its a really cool bacteria (but literally 10 of these guys and your sick...like dysentery sick), but jesus, does it scare the fuck out of me.:accepted: |
Has anyone tried this before? I was thinking of registering in a class down at harbour centre to acquire a Van rec pass instead of using the burnaby one. After acquiring the pass, I am planning to swap that course to another one NOT at harbour centre. Is there any way of them to detect this and cancel the van pass? |

CHEM281 final was hard :okay: Got mangled on synthesis and I'm sure many felt the same way. Fucking Nabyl doesn't know how to scale.. /endminirant |
