Is anyone else having troubles with GPS? I can never get my location with BB maps because its stuck in searching for satellites. When I use google maps it uses the wireless tower pinpointing method to locate me (its not as accurate as GPS).

Using the original firmware that came with it. 162. Is there any benefit to upgrading firmwares?

i emailed them and got it within 5 hours! =)

it really seems like they are prioritizing everyone that emailed or post in their forum instead of going by order number...

I can find a signal in less than 30 secs if I'm outside. I'm using .221 though. And I find it's a great improvement over the original one that came with my Bold. There are newer OS, but I haven't bothered with them cause I haven't found any problems with the .221 that I'm using.

Google maps uses the cell tower first, and depending on where you are (and how far you are from being able to see the sky) will lock on to GPS satellites within 1 minute or so, if at all possible.

.234 has a lot of improvements with GPS locking. im currently using .247 and am having no problems with it either. in fact, .247 has a neat little function when you hold down the BB menu key. pops up an app switcher function.

There are two metal contacts on the corners of both sides at the bottom of you bold.

Magnet in the holster (specifically, right underneath where the Rogers logo is)

What Noizz said. It's those two contacts that are below the left and right programmable buttons (well, below the SD slot on the left side). When you put your Bold in the cradle, it pushes out the contacts on the cradle that make contact with these two contact points. Slick eh?

Am I OK to update even though I'm locked? First smartphone, not sure how that goes, exactly.

Yep. Updating firmware doesn't affect network lock

The Bold can update to any of the available carrier firmwares. Its just that some like sticking with the Rogers ones. Even though yours is locked you're free to update any of the newer ones if youd like. Heres a guide on crackberry to update to .247. Which I think is the newest one so far. No problems so far on mine.

Will I lose any of my contacts/files/pictures/etc. when I update firmware?

nope, you will lose nothing. you might just have to re-enter your login info for some apps such as google w/ latitude, facebook, etc. depends on your apps. to be sure, run them all once and get them reconfigured if needed.

Got it, but was a bit worried for a minute, 'cause I'd just updated to 247 and got an error 200...and two restarts.

But everything's fine, and we're all cool.

Note to self: make sure to back things up regularly.
