^lol.. was this a solo trip? what was the total cost/budget in the end?
one day I'll have to take time off and do an awesome trip like this.. lol

Solo trip, not including hotels except for the couple I didn't book in Japan because I was looking forward to finding my accommodations on the spot. Out of the couple hotels I stayed in, I think some of the best sleep came from the Capsule Inn's! 30 to 40 bucks a night depending where you stay was totally worth it.

So to answer your question, I pretty much went through Singapore/Cambodia/Vietnam/HK/Beijing only spending 1000$ without paying for the Sinapore, HK and Beijing accomidation.
The other 1000$ I spent in Japan for 12 days. This excludes my JRpass and 3 nights stay out of the 12 days. The rest of my money went towards Capsule inn's, one night stays, gifts, admission and food. Food's expensive in Japan and you get a lot less then in North America. Bring food like granola bars, buy eggs or book hotels with free breakfast :D
Convince stores serve fresh food daily and it's the cheapest alternative quick on the go food. It's not like North America, the food is actually fresh and good!
I splurged here and there like a sashimi lunch at the fish market for 16$

I'll try to blog more, I'm only on HK so far. If you'd like to ask me some more detailed questions about my trip (food, money, admission) please don't hesitate in msging me!

I did Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia in 3 1/2 months. I flew to Singapore and from there just bus, once a train, and of course the 2 day boat ride. :)
Singapore was not much to see...and expensive.
Malaysia very nice. A lot of things to see..
No questions asked about Thailand.
Laos..amazing. Back in time with ....50years.
Vietnam...felt in love. Stayed a month. Halong Bay is something. Stayed overnight on the boat. Sweet.
Cambodia...just waited to get out of there. Temples...amazing. One day was enough for me.

I thought the New Years Party scene sucked in HK though.
HK's good for food and just chilling with friends, that's all.

1) Singapore is great for food, the city is super clean. You're not missing much. The people are super nice. Guess you'll just have to wait for me. I can probably house you if we go. =D

2) HK is fun during New Years if you know where to go. But with the economy it's really no surprise that it's a bit dead. I was there for New Years and honestly...not as great as most years.

Ya I didn't know you were stopping in HK. Thought I'd catch you either in Singapore or China. Next time and I guess I'll just have to be the one to take you out to really show you HK :D

Anyone know of cheap flights out to Cambodia (PP or SR) to Hanoi? Most I've seen are in around the $250 mark

I never went to Saigon, so I can't help you there. I only landed in Hanoi to go visit Halong Bay.

What would you like to know?
If you're in HK and want to travel somewhere within China, just take the extra one and half hour trip to Shenzhen for cheaper flight.

Good luck with your trip!

From what I remember flying out of PP is cheaper then SR. If you can find a flight out of SR to Hanoi for $250 I'd take it! I paid around $280.

^Cool, thanks.

Me and my buddies are going and decided to go North to South in Vietnam but we gotta get from Cambodia to Hanoi. I think it's better if we work our way from SR to HCMC and fly from HCMC to Hanoi since the flight is ~$70. The toss up is the day's worth of travel to get to HCMC.

You can take a bus from SR to HCMC then make your way up the coast if you have the time. Heard one of the best things to do in Vietnam is take the train from the south to the north
