| History follow-up: Two boys died following horrific crash on Hwy 1 (verdict reached)
RIP... Quote:
COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) - Two of the three young boys injured in yesterday's horrific Highway 1 crash in Coquitlam have died in hospital.
The boys were brothers, aged six and nine. Their 8 year old brother is barely holding on at BC Children's Hospital. Two other elderly relatives described as being in very critical condition.
The van they were in was carrying eight family members and had stopped in the HOV lane because of mechanical problems. RCMP Corporal Peter Thiessen says there was a shoulder to the lane but for whatever reason the woman at the wheel couldn't get the minvan there.
It was then hit by an SUV, which in turn was hit by a car.
The drivers of those vehicles, who were riding alone, were not seriously hurt, but they are facing charges for using the HOV lane while being the sole passenger of the car.
Thiessen says it's important for witnesses to come forward, "They may have seen that first vehicle traveling half a mile, or five seconds before, to determine what its movements were."
He says there were child restraints in the minivan and he believes they were being used correctly.
Thiessen added if you're having car troubles on major roads to stay seatbelted in the vehicle, turn on fourway flashers and call for help immediately. | |

Watching the news, it looks like the first vehicle was a newer mini-van.
The second vehicle was an X5 and the third vehicle was a 4 door Echo.
No mentions of the race of any of the parties involved, not that it matters I guess.
Such a shame.
RIP.

Absolutely terrible. A family destroyed. RIP.
And I would hate to jump to conclusions, but I see it so often on highway 1, those pieces of shit driving alone and using the HOV to race through traffic should go to fucking hell.

driving alone or not in the HOV lane is fairly irrelevent when you stop right in the middle of the lane..

Until the full story comes out - why the van was stopped in the middle of the fucking lane, hazards on/off, etcetc. We can't really speculate.
All that's really left are 2 innocent lives lost and 2 separate parties left to grieve.
RIP boys, may you be forever surrounded with all the coolest Lego and Transformer toys. |

I was driving along there that morning and the visibility wasn't that bad. That section of road is also pretty damn straight and you can easily see traffic further up the road since there's a slight incline. This wasn't a car stopped in the middle of the night with another car coming around a corner and being "surprised".
Any idiot following a vehicle making an emergency stop can also stop in time. If you're following too close or not paying attention then you might have a minor rear-ender. But I find it hard to believe a Toyota Sienna with a full load can outbrake a BMW X5.
This is why I'll go out on a limb and say the BMW driver was in the middle lane and decided to make a quick lane change into the HOV lane to pass other traffic. I say "quick lane change" because if he was paying attention he could have seen something was going on. I'm betting he swerved out into the HOV lane so quick he didn't have time to move back and rear-ended the Toyota at a very high rate of speed.
The van cabin was filling with smoke. Electrical fire anyone? You people expect brake/hazard lights to work in such a situation? And you think that maybe there's a reason the van didn't make it to the shoulder since it was having mechanical troubles?
We'll have to see what charges the X5 driver faces. If it was really an "accident" then he won't be charged. But if he was driving aggrressively, then I bet he will. This is probably why the police are asking for witnesses leading up to the accident. They have the van - it can be examined to see where the smoke came from or if the steering works. So why are they asking for witnesses? I bet it's to see the actions of the BMW driver before the accident, not the van driver. They know what happened with the van - it broke down and stopped.

Why dont they just use the blackbox to see what was happening?

Not to mention that there is more then enough room to pull a full sized vehicle onto the shoulder at that stretch
