I think the thing with studdable snow tires vs studless snow tires is that they don't seem to be as good in general, especially for ice traction because it was assumed that you were going to stud them and it kinda relies on that. I think the US DOT published a report on this a couple years ago.

I was on Hankook iPike w409's for two seasons and found them great in snow but kinda crappy on ice, which kinda corroborates that theory.

All tires kind of suck on ice though, which doesn't really swing the theory either way.

wrong, some tires are made for ice traction while some are meant for deep snow traction. its really a comprise, u either get one or the other, there no tire that can be both good on ice and in snow.

ps: is it safe to run 225/45/17 on a 17X6.5 rim? i know the tires r kinda wide but i dont want to buy another set.

Yeah that's fine my old car had a 6" wide rim on a 215 from factory so yours should be no problem, maybe you'll get more curb protection too

you can run 215 on a 6" wheel if it's not low profile. but on tirerack it says you can't run smaller than a 7" wheel on a 225/45/17

i'm gonna be running michelin x-ice xi2. wanted conti extremewintercontacts, but no stock. wasn't gonna wait until late december for them. with our winters, better to get ice based snow tires.

Will throw on my set of Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice & Snow when there's a decent amount of snow.. For now I'm still running my brand spanking new Yokohama Envigors, They have been tested to be able to handle light snow.

Yeah I once ran 225/45/17 Azenis on 17x6.5 rims, even autocrossed on that setup. It was fine just bulgy. But you lose out on contact patch, especially on a softer tire.

Cannot wait to get mine mounted. $320 for 4 195/65/15 inc shipping, no taxes and duty. JCWhitney had a fantastic deal going when I ordered.

CT has them on sale for $93, which is a very good local deal.

They are good tires. I ran them on my Mazda 6 going from Kelowna -> Vancouver for one full season. I'm switching over to Michelin Artic Alpins this year

Pirelli SnowSport 240 on both the A4 and the MINI. Wear pretty well for a winter tire...
