I have driven the R35 as well and found that the car is too boring. Although the car hold immense speed, it just isn't involving to drive. I literally find that it doesn't take much driver's skill to drive it very fast on the track.

Basically means if I see one on the track and it starts beating everyone else, it is only because of the car. If the same driver move out to another car with no driver aid, that driver will probably get its ass handed to him.

Elises are too slow and not worth it to mod plus they have bare interiors , may as well get an atom if your getting an elise.

A) Overall speed is not the question here. The OP admits the GTR is plenty fast, but too boring. An Elise is anything but... and also wouldn't be for daily driving anyway.

B) People are too pampered when they drive anyway. I drive my Land Rover every day, and an Elise is luxurious by comparison... and you know what? I don't miss things like a finely padded seat, a headrest, sound deadening, a radio, carpet, A/C, or a decent heater. And beyond all that, Defender interiors are fine; they've got all that stuff, and are plenty comfortable for daily driving, so who cares?

They are both extreme garbage catering to drivers on two different ends of the spectrum. Nobody who wants to drive a Defender enjoys driving an Elise, I mean come on. Does a true sports car driver like a stupid-useless-vehicle (SUV)? Does an SUV driver like sports cars? No.

I like sports cars. I can barely tolerate SUVs. If I had an SUV in my garage, it would only be driven 5% of my total driving miles and my all purpose sports car (read 911) will be driven 95%. I much rather get a 911 and an Audi RS4 if I need something more practical.

Neither is extreme garbage, and you know it. Lotus is, was, and probably always be considered the last word on handling, and Land Rover is, was, and definitely always will be the last word on off-road capable. And actually you can fit a baby seat quite easily. I wouldn't fit it to mine, since it's from 1973 and thus has absolutely no safety equipment, but there's plenty of Defenders with baby seats.

And plenty of people actually do own both an SUV and a sports car. Like me. 1973 Land Rover, 1995 Range Rover, 1974 Jaguar XJ-12, and a 1968 MG Midget. In fact, with the current crop of Range Rovers being so successful, I've met plenty of fellows with grade-A sports cars for fun, and Rovers for practicality.

As for the SUV's general notions of uselessness, I'd probably agree. The modern Cayenne/X3/X5/Q7/Explorer/Santa-Fe/LR3/Range Rover Sport set are useless, bloated sedans that have overgrown their practicality. But Land Rover Defenders and Series trucks cannot be considered alongside those vehicles. There's only a few hunderd of them in the country, and as such, they attract a different set of buyer. I have yet to see someone use a Defender poorly. They're built to go places nothing else will go, and pretty much all the local Defenders and Series trucks are use off-road extensively. When was the last time you were trapped behind a Land Rover Defender or Series vehicle?

GTR is out to tell the world that you can go Porsche turbo fast while sitting 4 in good comfort, have a large boot and go snowboarding all in the same goddamned car. It's just boring......but it can do the above rather well.

Elise + Defender is exactly not that.

madz what about a Maserati GT with 6 speed? Aston Martin DB7 slightly used? and so forth? you can see where i'm going here it's bunch of rather posh sports cars that needs you to shift..... I think for someone stepping off a R35 these will suit their taste very well.

Point is both are extreme ends of the scale and averaging their driving characteristics does not give you the best of both worlds. There is no car that mixes driving pleasure of a sports car and daily drivability better than a Porsche 911.

This isn't about 911s. It's about a guy looking to replace with GTR with something more... interesting. If that's a 911, great. But averaging the sports car experience with practicality will always lead you to a compromise... and why compromise when you can have the best of both worlds?

EDIT: I'd also wager that the R8 mixes sports car ability with daily driver practicality as well as a 911. But niether will cope with inclement conditions :D

Why would a ZR1 at $130K be out of your range but a car at $100K isn't? There's really no difference in price once you get to that point.

Or are you saying you can just afford $100K, but not $130K in which case I have some serious questions about how you manage your money.

I'm sure the ZR1 will give you a lot of "smiles" for that measly extra $30K. :)
