Are Subarus like Toyota, non-negotiable on price?

I was at Docksteader the other day ready to sign a deal on an '09, but ended up walking out because they did not want to negotiate on the car.

Are they like Toyota now in that they don't negotiate from MSRP (and I just didn't know this), or was the salesman just being a hardass?

Richmond Subaru seemed really willing to negotiate on their 08 WRX demo car, but with reports that the turbo motors are blowing rod bearings lately I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

kawloonprince 12-29-2008 11:07 AM

Depends which person you are dealing with. I was at Richmond Subaru and was talking to Sebastian Goh. I think I could've dropped a couple K's from a STI.

SolidPenguin 12-29-2008 11:15 AM

I was at Richmond Subaru too and nice guy named Rainco Wan sold me a 2007 Impreza brand new. There was a $5000 rebate that month, and on top of that he was willing to take off a few thousand more. So that $25K sticker didnt mean a whole lot.

windchaser 12-29-2008 11:17 AM

its always not easy to get lots of discount for 09 cars ..... especially entry level cars ...

LowTEC 12-29-2008 11:22 AM

I'm surprised they are not giving out huge discount at this time of economy, I guess the snow this month really helped out Subaru?!

6thGear. 12-29-2008 04:26 PM

It depends who your talking too. I got $2000 off MSRP on my 07 WRX from docksteader. I can try to find the salesmans' name that helped me. He was actually really good and is the main reason why I stuck with him. At first he got some asian guy to do my sale, but I didn't like his attitude so I held out till I got him back. I can't remember about the 08 WRX, but for the STI's was due to the fact that owners were constantly revving the engine off the rev limiter before the car was even broken in.

DC5-S 12-29-2008 04:43 PM

wow.. ive never hit the rev limiter ONCE in my rsx.. cant believe how stupid some people are

No this is a separate issue.

There was a stop sale on anything with the Turbo 2.5 in '08, and now there have been 14 reported cases of rod bearing failure on '09 WRX's since they came out. In all cases, the motor had to be replaced.

ok. yeah, I couldn't remember. I think I read somewhere that it affected a certain batch only, so meybe check the VIN on that 08 from richmond subaru? But if its also creeping into the 09's thats got to suck. Are the affected 09's all 2.5L? WRX? or WRX265? I don't really bother to read much into it since it doesn't really affect me. Thank god I decided to stick with the 07

haha, I took my mom with me to surrey honda, and she negotiated a WICKED Deal on a 07 civic si lol :wooha:

Fafine 12-29-2008 08:28 PM

^ lets hear about this deal

Shun Izaki 12-29-2008 08:47 PM

Im considering trading in my car for a new WRX... considering they're pretty damn powerful, but i wonder how fuel economy is from owners. I get a pretty good tank (50L/500km)

You don't drive the car at the track or autox then do you?

I bought my 07 WRX from Docsteader. I got a few thousand off the MSRP.
The guy who sold me my car was Tom Yeung. Great guy to deal with since there was almost no hassle.

I don't know what the gas mileage on the 08/09's are, but I get about 400 km/tank. Mind you, I'm running on a custom stage 2 tune running 94 Oct.

Screw all those policies. Start talking about the economy, how people are being laid off, the big 3, how Toyota is projecting their first loss in 71 years. If they're not willing to budge, i'm sure the next salesperson will accept your business!

Strange. I enjoy racing my cars and asides from purposely testing for where the rev hard limit is, I've never once hit it.

OT: AFAIK, Subaru negotiates their prices. Back when I was looking at possibly leasing one a couple years ago they were willing to talk about the price of the car.

Your mom negotiated for you?

68style 12-30-2008 06:54 AM

You guys all talk about the rev limiter like it's some scary thing that if you're bouncing off it the car will explode... all it does is retard the ignition so you can't go past a certain RPM, it just sounds awful, its not damaging... if it wasn't there and you were going a grand or so past your redline then yah you're doing bad... but it's there so that doesn't happen.

I bounced off mine all the time in the only car that had one and never had a problem, mostly at auto/x because it was necessary to run it as deep as possible in the faster bits without upshifting to 3rd, etc.

Hopefully you got a good deal b/c the car could almost be two years old now! Was it brand new off the lot and they couldn't sell it?

I own a 08 Si, love it! I made sure to buy my car outside the VIN range for the known third gear problems. Hopefully you don't experience the same.

That's good your mom helped you out with the negotiating. I would have asked my dad b/c he is older and i think would garner more respect, but saving my ego was worth more to me than the extra $500 saved =)

Sweet2L 12-30-2008 10:22 AM

Agreed if you've ever taken your car to the track and not hit the limiter on occasion you're not driving it hard enough =p Obviously you wouldn't hit it too often daily driving. I think the key is not to do it when your engine is still cold.

Eff-1 12-30-2008 11:07 AM

Just don't do this!

I was told that the car was traded in, I had been stalking their iventory online prior to buying, So I assume It had been sitting on their lot for about 2 weeks. There's no claims and kms are low. I saved around 3g's in the end

Saving money is crucial at my age so I wasn't worried about my ego.
