Root canal if possible. Extraction only as a last resort, not because of the pain (it's painless) but becasue of the horrible feeling of not having a tooth anymore.
I had a root canal AND a extraction done last year - at the same time. Wisdom extraction and Molar root canal.
Honestly, the pain of the cavity was far worse than the operation. The worst part of the operation was the inital anaesthetic needle, which wasn't even that bad.
Now, the WORST pain I've ever experienced in my entire life - so bad it literally made me cry - was after a root canal, when the freezing wore off. There was a huge amount of PUSS building up in my jaw around that molar, and it felt like I had a ZIT ready to pop right on my gums, except it wasn't on the surface, it was DEEP under my gums. The specialist (Amir Ajar - best dentist in Vancouver, IMHO) actually had to CUT my gums and drain the puss. That was unbelievably fucking painful. Pray it never happens to you.

i had a root canal done on a tooth, then a year later, another root canal on the same tooth... lol. its been fine ever since, they will put a crown on your tooth, it feels real enough. lol.
root canals i find interesting, you don't feel a thing, your sitting there for a good hour and a bit or the full 2 and a bit hours if you do both things in one sitting. depending on how many roots you have, i was lucky, i had 3 geeze (sarcasm, that's the most on a tooth). all you see is the dentist doing their thing, im not gonna tell you what, but its interesting and you don't feel it at all. your ass gets numb for sure, bring some music of your liking to down away the sounds.
Root canal ftw btw.

Yup, keep it clean and cap it. Root canal is a waste of time and money if not capped.

ive had 3 root canals (has a nasty bike accident) and they're not bad at all.. unless you have a seriously low tolerance for any amount of pressure and drilling noises.

I'm sitting on my couch right now with about 10lbs of gauze in my mouth after having all four of mine pulled out. Mind you they were brutal, and had to have all four cut into pieces and pulled out a piece at a time. And that was with an oral surgeon doing it, ended up costing about ~ 1500 before my insurance kicked in.

Plus, when they look at your x-ray after, your little crown and metal roots look like the machines from war of the worlds | why didn't you have any freezing? and just FYI the roots are not "metal", the canals are filled with a material that is just radioopaque
