OK, Vodafone UK is in talks to get it as an exclusive, so I want that one haha
But wow, check out this interview. The guy's absolutely hilarious with his Batman belt and Fabio hair, but listen closely to the end of the interview and what he says that the Pre can do. Wow. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/0...ased-features/ |

I don't know about you, but I couldn't stop listening to this guy for some reason. It's like he has an infectious personality. He's just wacky enough to sound like he knows what he's talking about.

On Jan 26 Palm lost the patent war against Apple and it looks like the Pre won't make it to the market.

The last I heard was that Apple *might* make an attempt to protect its patents.
But on the flip side, Palm has a few patents that it might be able to catch Apple on.

WOW
That looks absolutely sick
There's also going to be a NAM version for those with data?
I wonder if it also supports DIVX like the new blackberries do..

Palm doesn't do NAM traditionally as their phones are usually tri-band 3G. IF they have 3G. Wait a little less than a month for the HSDPA version to drop at a little show in Europe. |

News is dropping that the GSM/UMTS European version of the Palm Pre being developed will only be dual band for 3G (ie: 900/2100mhz) and will not be compatible with 3G networks in North America (850/1900mhz). Apparently Palm doesn't want to step on any toes with their exclusive deal with Sprint in the US.
I'm really disappointed as I was looked forward to the Pre. Do you think there's any chance Telus or Bell will be picking up the Pre in Canada? Can you buy a Sprint branded Pre and use it on the Bell/Telus networks?
I'm a Fido user right now (contract up in June), and if I can't get a Pre I guess I may get a BB Bold or something.

Where did you hear that?
And Telus and Bell are pretty much getting the Pre for sure. Telus first, sometime in the summer then Bell at the end of the year.
If you ask me though, it'll likely be pushed back for both carriers, but the release order will likely be the same.

What? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO /Monica
It's a silly decision to do that, though. I mean, how many people will actually drop the cash and import one from the UK? Not that many, not when a Sprint version is available and subsidized. If anything, they'd be getting more revenue and only affecting their carrier partner in a tiny, insignificant manner. I'd be pissed if NAM gets the shaft again. These Euro/NAM versions of everything is really starting to get on my nerves!

I was also just reading how the Sprint EVDO version has a major flaw due to how EVDO works. Apparently you cannot use data and voice at the same time, as voice requires the data connection to be disconnected. The European UMTS version will not have this problem.
Will this affect the Telus/Bell versions?

I don't like how Sprint/Palm said an unlimited data plan is strongly encouraged due to the Pre's constant connectivity. Sounds like a Rogers/Fido data bill disaster when it arrives on GSM.

Well, like all smartphones, data is vital to bringing the full potential out of such a device. More so for the Pre, but I doubt it'll use much more than say, a BlackBerry, which every high school kid seems to have now.
The era of data is here. |

This is the most promising new phone I have seen. If it can be purchased out-of-contract for a quasi-reasonable price I will likely buy one. Better yet, an unlocked version straight from Palm, which is something they already offer.
The size seems ideal for a device that you keep in your pocket for most of the day and the built in keyboard is a huge bonus.
I really hope that there aren’t data requirements or other shenanigans to get your hands on this. A data plan might be required to “get the most” from it but for me (and many I’m sure) it’s still very worthwhile without spending another bundle every month. I’m at a coffee shop or library that has free wireless access every day and, for me, the real appeal of a device like this is the ability to be connected during those times, without cost, on a device I’m already carrying anyway. That alone makes it worthwhile.
The video and music capabilities, without having to carry around a second device, also make it plenty worthwhile.
My secondary considerations are for travelling; native skype and gps. I don’t want to pay for international data roaming fees, or be dependent on streaming cell coverage, to use my gps. On board maps please. Give me all this and I’ll pay a lot to get my hands on this.
On the down side; 8GB is too small and there’s no expansion slot. I hope more memory is offered by the time this is actually released. In a review Palm also indicated that they went with a portrait oriented keyboard to be recognizable and different. I’m a form following function kind of guy and that’s just hokey. Other than that it’s gravy.

In regards to the keyboard, I feel I actually type faster on the vertical/portrait style keyboards. Since all the keys are closer together, thumb travel between keys is very quick and my typing speeds up considerably, plus it is much easier to handle one handed. On a horizontal/landscape style keyboard I do type with slightly fewer errors.

The era of data is here. | Kids these days seriously do not know what is good for them. I'd wager a good a majority are just hooked on FB, BB messenger, or something gay.
For the greater good of society, these devices should be heavily banned.

The era of data is here. | It's just scary since I loaded my SIM into my iPhone yesterday for the first time and I used 50MB of 3G data. All I did was look at my current location in Google Maps for 2 minutes, watch a 2 minute Youtube video, and browse Revscene for 15 minutes. I figure I might even use more data than that on other days, and if averaged out over a month, it far exceeds my 1GB data plan. Quote:

With turn-by-turn gps coming to the iphone, along with the other updates in 3.0, I'm beginning to wonder how well the pre will fare. The only thing remaining on my personal wish list is native skype, which the pre may or may not get.
There's also talk that AT&T will offer contract free iphones ($599 for 8GB / $699 for 16 GB). If Rogers follows suit then the decision comes down to price.
Hopefully the pre can be purchased new and unlocked for around $500 USD. I'm eager to see what unfolds in the next few months.

If Palm can get more developers on its back, I'll bet you'll see a lot of people switching over to the Pre. The 3.0 update is great, hell I have an iPhone and I can't wait for it to be released but honestly WebOS > 3.0 still, and this is in it's first iteration. The moment it comes out in NA HSPA form you can bet i'll be all over it.
