Comeback Kid's Power Play: Palm Drops the Pre

Today's the day I've been waiting for. I'm a huge Palm fanboy, and seeing the company struggle with lousy leadership, bad detours and stagnant product growth really sucked. They just announced their new phone and new OS, and even though I can already see it's flawed, I still want one. :D

My favourite feature so far? Wireless charging. WIRELESS FREAKIN' CHARGING. LOVE that dock...it's magnetic!!!:eek: The OS is freakin' nuts, Linux base but everything else is built on HTML, CSS, that sort of thing. It quite literally is a webOS. D-pad? The black bits under the screen is where you do gestures, so it's multi-touch on and off the screen so you can do things like....copy and paste. :p

UMTS/HSPA version to come.

EDIT: Whole crap of edits due to me being incapacitated by a geekgasm. Do watch the videos...it's awesome.

Induction charging, like, say, my electric toothbrush. Nothing new, but not seen on many gadgets yet, let alone phones!

PALM'S BACK, BABEEEEEE:haha::haha::haha:

dton13 01-08-2009 09:06 PM

I fucking love it! the OS looks awesome, hardware isnt bad either. Competition is finally heating up.

09 is looking to be an awesome year for phones

Alphamale 01-08-2009 09:28 PM

This is definitely going to be interesting. I've never used a Palm device before but it looks like it that might change!

RR33 01-08-2009 09:29 PM

I <3 palm! they hit the right nail on this phone.

squeezing in on the very crowded smartphone war. they're back after long hiatus!

!Aznboi128 01-08-2009 10:00 PM

I hate to admit it but this is what the Blackberry Storm should've been... Great come back with the Pre, Palm!!! I'll be watching the progress of this phone very carefully.

The interface is just smooth smooth smooth! Are you watching, RIM? Go back and fix the Storm's OS. lol

Xander 01-08-2009 10:23 PM

Loved the Treos. My first phone that I actually bought was a Treo 650. Went through that, then the Black Tie Treo 650 and an orange Treo 680 and loved them all. :D

Bonjour43MA 01-09-2009 07:08 PM

I used a Treo 650 and thought the interface was very easy to use and intuitive... and it had quite a lot of features for its time as well. Then Palm started to slack off and let RIM and WM take over compeltely and died off the scene.

If they can get this phone onto as many networks as possible they will have a very good chance or making a dramatic comeback... beating RIM or Apple? nah, it'll still take some time to do that, but man is phone is VERY VERY impressive.... makes me wanna quit being a crackberry head and move over lol.

+Kardboard+ 01-09-2009 07:44 PM

Sprint (CDMA EVDO Rev. A) in the States first for most of 2009 with an European HSPA version coming within half a year. Not sure if the Euro version will have tri-band HSPA like the old Treo 750v did, but it better damn well have it.

I will sell a kidney to get a Vodafone-branded Pre. :p

OK, maybe not, but speaking of "Pre," doesn't it look like Pré? Like pronounced, "pray?" Because damn, praying is what Palm's doing right now lol Such a huge gamble.

McDick 01-09-2009 10:20 PM

This device won't sell. They are too late into the market right now.
In Canada, people are already into 3-year contract when the iphone/bold released. How many people are willing to fork over $300+ for a Palm phone upgrade? Palm might has some nice features, but it's not going to sell.
Most likely only Telus will carry this phone as well, since nobody currently carries Palm's phone except Telus.
Will you pay extra penalty to break your contract and move over to Telus to get this phone? I doubt it.

I shorted some Palm shares this morning at around $6.20. Looked like a easy profit due to hype.

umm yeah right. MWC is coming next month. so do you think all those phone that will be announce won't sell as well?

how exactly are they late on market? if you're talking about android, that thing is still unfolding, apple is closed system, Symbian Foundation wont be arriving till 2010, WM7 according to eldar will be late again for atleast 7 months aswell as WM6.5 for 4 months.

so palm is on time in the market. the set of features, hardware and UI basically outdue apple which other manufacturer are trying to do but fail miserably. (ok maybe not on cam/vid part)

also palm is releasing a GSM version so for those ppl who doesn't like to be locked with thier carrier can opt for a gsm unlock version.

+Kardboard+ 01-10-2009 03:04 PM

Palm always sells an unlocked GSM version of their GSM-capable phones. Of course, this is WCDMA/HSPA too. Even better.

Too early to tell still. Looks good, but then will it really deliver?

+Kardboard+ 01-11-2009 11:51 AM

Too early to tell for sure, but it sure as hell is a good start in the proper direction. I believe!!!! Palm Powered for lyfe! :lol

Simplex123 01-11-2009 01:27 PM

well its running TI OMAP 3. that alone say ALOT. it will be much smoother than iphone thats for sure.

+Kardboard+ 01-11-2009 04:30 PM

Although the hardware itself is kinda me, watch the live demos and notice how they thought about the user experience and their philosophy behind that. It's the original zenith of Palm shining through here, brought into the 21st century lol

DAMMIT I want my banana-pebble phone NOW.
