| Mazdaspeed 3 break in procedure?
Does anyone know the break in procedure for a Mazdaspeed 3? It doesn't say anything in the owner's manual.
I know there's a few Mazdaspeed 3 owners on the site that can tell me...
Thanks!

Shouldn't be different than any other car. Besides most cars nowadays are broken in from the factory.

Shift between 3 and 4, but don' exceed 4 for hte first 1000-1500km. Then after that, higher revving. Deaccelerating is good for hte piston rings, etc and try not to bog the car.

I kept mine below 4k RPM for the first 3000km's. Otherwise afterwards I just drove it like normal.....well, "normal" for this car anyways

Make a huge dent with blunt object somewhere on the driver's door right below the window but above the middle line of door panel. Preferably, you strike somewhere near the handle.
Good thing is, you can try over and over and over again. Until you get it right.

1. Launch gently
2. Apply full throttle
3. Shift at redline in the first 3 gears
4. Turn around
5. Repeat
Seriously though, I've always taken it easy for the first few thousand km's. I've also changed my own oil at 500-1000 km's and again half way to the first service. Obsessive? Maybe. However, seeing the small metal filings in the "old" oil made me feel good about doing it.
Also, don't take it easy to the point of lugging the engine.

Remember if you're using the turbo at all don't shut it off right away after or the oil will sit in the turbo and bake itself ![Smilie](/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif) Don't necessarily need a turbo timer, just use your noggin and think "Was I just ripping on it? Okay better let it idle for a couple minutes before I shut off"
Congrats Bry... weird how we always buy the same cars haha... Mustang... Celica... I came within a hair of buying a MSP3 and decided not to at the last minute. Hope to see it sometime!

As for break-in, I took it easy for the first 1000kms or so, but nothing anymore special then the next car. Buy an alarm with turbo-timer.
I know you want to keep it stock, but an intake is a nice safe mod that will bring out the turbo whoosh a bit, while also giving you about 15-20whp.
Where did you buy the car from? I saw a black MS3 being prepped at the richmond automall late last week, wonder if it was yours.

And here's the official lines from the manual No special break-in is necessary, but a few precautions in the first 1,000 km (600 miles) may add to the performance, economy, and life of your Mazda.
- Don't race the engine.
- Don't maintain on constant speed, either slow or fast, for a long period of time.
- Don't drive constantly at full throttle or high engine rpm for extended periods of time
- Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
- Avoid full throttle starts.

Kev | Could have been mine. I bought from Signature Mazda I put the deposit down on saturday and picked it up yesterday.
They still have to fix a scratch on the driver's side door, they told me they will find a body shop on the island to do it.

I wasn't expecting to buy a car this weekend, I was on the mainland for the fiancee's parents' anniversary so I figured I'd just cruise the automall and see what was out there. When I saw $26,860 on the car I got interested, and when they negotiated down to 25,500 I said DEAL!
You have to bring the wife and VISIT dammit!
Here it is, probably the cleanest it's ever going to be:

2nd method:
you can also break-into the car buy kicking the driver side door right above the the door handle. if you see a big dent on the door of a Mazda 3, you know there was an attempt for a break-in.
this is very common problem for the earlier models. i believe there is a recall for it.
good luck with your break in. j/k
