w00t!!! Just ordered a Canon SD 790 IS

I haven't had a P&S in AGES, and sometimes I don't feel like carrying my DSLR (my walkaround setup is a 20D with a BG-E2N usually with a Wigma 10-20), and sometimes the 20mm just isn't enough...sooooo I ordered a Canon SD 790 IS (free with Air Miles ). I'm so stoked...

I've had a Canon A70 (got stolen ...my first digicam), my bro used to have an A520 or something, now has an SX100 (Kinda like that camera), and my g/f has an SD1000 and bought her parents an SD770 for Xmas...I have a 10D a 20D and a 30D lol...my family is pretty much Canon'd out now lol...I'm sooooo stoked

Can't go wrong with Canon's SD series P&S. I had the SD1000 which didn't even have IS and I still got solid pics out of it. Video recording is quite amazing too for a little camera like that.

Yeah, I love Canon P&Ss...my g/f bought herself a Pentax (told her not to), and 95% of the pictures were garbage. I took it back and bought her an SD1000 with the money...and they're amazing. The rest of my family's Canons have served us rather well too

I'm kinda bummed out about the no full manual option on the SD790 IS, but I guess I'll live. I played around with it today at Future Shop and it looks and feels nice I'm really looking forward to video and time-lapse stuff

I picked up two 16GB cards today (I usually hate high-GB cards and all my CFs for my DSLRS are 1/2/4 GBs, but the price was unbeatable...30 bucks for a 16GB Kingston Class 4). And I'm on the hunt for a good bag

w00t...picked up the Pelican 1010 today (to my surprise and delight, the lid is also padded, in addition to the rubber liner on the inside of the bottom part), and I bought a cheap little dollar-store mini tripod...with a ballhead! haha

If you can find a Panasonic LX3, them go for it. It has a large sensor compared to its competition, which means more dynamic range, less noise and cleaner images. They're nowhere to be found right now, as the factory was having some kind of problem, but they should be back in store soon. There is the Leica version, the Leica D-Lux4 which is more expensive, but you get better software and a longer warranty. If you're really a baller, they just introduced a titanium bodied D-Lux4 that is super sexy for $1300. O.O The cameras have an amazing Leica lens, but is only a 24-60mm f2.8 equivalent. If you want more zoom range, then see below.

The Canon G10 is a worthy competitor to the LX3, but its image quality in low light is not as good, the lens at the wide end doesn't go as wide, but it has a longer zoom range. Both the Panasonic and Canon have the ability to shoot RAW.

There is a new camera by Fuji that promises to be amazing. The FinePix F200EXR essentially has two CCD sensors that are offset by one pixel. What this enables the camera to do is take two images simultaneously take two exposures and combine them. One side will start an exposure for the shadows, and partway through the exposure, the highlight portion will start taking an exposure so they end at the same time. This way you have a semi-HDR image for an amazingly high dynamic range for a P&S camera.

Everyone needs a P&S camera. I just got a refurbished Canon SD1000 a week ago for $90 shipped (Canon estore) but before that I didn't have a P&S camera for over a year. There are many situations where you want to take pictures but don't want to bring a DSLR.

I also recommend Canon P&S cameras to all my friends. They process the pictures better than most other cameras. I remember taking the same picture with a HP camera and a Canon camera. The color and exposure on the Canon was more accurate and made the picture look better.

Also, with many Canon P&S cameras, you can install a hacked firmware called CHDK that enables more features such as RAW, auto bracketing for HDR photos, timelapse, unlocked ISO, etc.

I just picked up an SD 890 IS and am very, very happy with the quality of the pictures.

How much was that mini pelican case? Where did you buy it?

Denny: yeah, since I posted this thread, I've found the hack for the 790...I'm really excited about that

Kite: It was 15 bucks from London Drugs...can't go wrong with that for a padded, water-resistant hard case

Which dollar store did you get it from? I'm trying to look for a cheap tripod for my P&S.

I think it was Dollarama...they usually have them in stock...It's about 6" tall w/ extendable legs, just to give you an idea of the size.

The current T series from Sony is also very good. I picked up a T700 for my fiancée for Christmas and it's been absolutely amazing. A co-worker picked up the T500 this weekend and thus far the picture quality has been exactly the same as the T700 and it's video capabilities are impressive to say the least.
