i believe most optometrists ( i know it's the case for ours) won't do a contact lens fitting unless you have a recent prescription..
i also know for a fact that some optical places will dispense contacts w/o really any trainings or 'fittings'... some just essentially give you the prescription that's meant for glasses and not necessarily contacts.

Thanks BabyblooLexus. I went after reading one of the threads on RFD and got fitted yesterday. I don't have a membership and they didn't request it which was a bonus.
