Here's a good question for you guys. What brand of hockey tape do you use? I have some Renfrew brand that I bought from Sport Chek. The black and white tape is pretty good. Edges doesn't catch when I am taping the stick, so no left over ring on the edge of the tape. Material is thick enough that it is easy to rip, and has about the right amount of stick. Too bad the rolls are a little narrow so it takes a few extra times around the blade when I am taping my stick.
The clear sock tape is pretty good too. The tape is thick enough so I can really tug on the tape to get a really tight fit without the tape ripping.

Another brand of sock tape I am using is the Lowry label. The tape has good stick, but too thin of tape so I end up ripping the tape when I am taping the shin pads.

Can't remember some of the other brands I tried, but those were the shits were the tape is too sticky and leaves some of the material on the roll and you end up taping with some see through tape. Or the edge catches and you end up with a ring of tape after you are done taping your stick.

I only use yellow tape to do the handles on the stick (Savard/Kovalchuk style.) I tried that $5 gauze-like grippy tape that Renfrew makes and it just deteriorates after a month... definitely not worth the money. The only colored tape I like is Lowry (bought at Cyclones.)

For the blade of my stick I use white Renfrew, the skinnier kind. I just bought a pack of the thicker kind and once I use this up I'll be switching back because I find it's easier to tape with the skinnier tape.

For sock tape I just use R-Brand (Costco.) It's cheaper than buying Renfrew and it's not garbage tape like the ones you would find at Superstore. R-Brand stick tape on the other hand sucks.

That doesn't make sense. It's the same surface area isn't it?

depends on how much you overlap. with the skinny tape you're overlapping like 3 times more.

example no overlap

example lots of overlap

That happens to me all the time with R-Brand, sometimes with Renfrew and never with Lowry.

Anybody ever try the tape from Superstore? I think it's called Eagle, not sure if they still carry it. Shittiest tape ever, it's not even sticky.

I doubt a person will ever be able to tell the grams of difference between a blade with slightly more tape on it due to overlap and one that skimps.

Plus, you can still do the same and use very little overlap with the skinnier tape.

Yeah that's what I do with skinny tape, just overlap less! Ends up being almost the same.

I'd argue that any difference a player feels would more likely result from more ridges (and thus more friction) on a blade with skinny tape changing the feel as the puck rolls from heel to toe. But I've seen guys play pretty well in a pinch without any tape at all, so who knows. I'm a terrible shot so I never feel the difference between the skinny and the fat tape hehe.

Helmet: RBK 4. Was using ccm 1052 for a couple of years but found the EPP foam not so comfy. Tried the RBK 6 and 8 but the old style foam is much more comfortable i found.

Visor: Bauer FM1000. One of the cheaper ones at the hockey shop. Was using one of these from 1996-2004 and found cleaned up well using clear plastic polish. Went to a oakly visor, but after a couple of years and a few scratches later, the plastic polish made it worse. Picked up another new Bauer fm1000 visor last year.

Shoulder pads: Jofa 9800. Later known as RBK 8. Center Ice series is way over kill for the level i play at. But got them off ebay for $50 in almost brand new condition years ago. Handy, cuz i tend to crash into the boards a lot.

Elbows: Jofa 8044. More of this center ice series stuff. $25 online, brand new. Nice pointy cap = protection for me = concussion for hard charging goons

Pants: CCM Supra 520. Again bought new online. From a seller had bunch of new and used pro equip. From the now defunked Greensboro Generals ECHL

Gloves: TPS r2. Comfy, Does the job

Shins: Bauer Vapor 10. Light and comfortable. Only $35 new. Take a guess how i bought these. 17 inch. Leaves no leg uncovered. (i'm only 5'10) Had to heat them up and make the shell a bit narrower. My legs are on the skinnier side.

Skates: CCM 1152. Sport Check was blowing them out about 5 years ago for $199. So cheap, i had to buy them, even though i didnt need them yet. Had them sitting in my closet for the last 4 years and finally started using them last spring. Took off the Prolite 3's and got Tuuk litespeeds installed, with a slight heel lift. I do feel there is more rocker on the baldes now, but the way i skate, doubt its going to help my game. Just looks cool.

Sticks: Franklin THT 850 titanium and TPS redllight. Easton ST stubby blades for that "low kick" feelin. Have a couple of TPS response sticks in my closet wihp and reg, but cant get used to that tapered shaft feeling. I like the old school stuff.

I tried that "Willie Mitchell aproved" Bladetape, but felt weird. Good old fashion tape works best for me
