It fills up pretty quickly but no need to call in advance. If you get there early you can even hop on the ice before 7:30. I got there at 7 today and was on the ice by 7:15. 2 teams, 2 goalies, about 6-7 spares per team?

Skill level varies, couple good players, some intermediate players and some noobs. A lot of older guys who are past their prime haha.

1. Fill bath tub with warm water and add one scoop of oxyclean
2. Soak gear for half an hour
3. Scrub with a brush and rinse with water
4. Air dry outside

I'm a goalie and to clean my gear, I use Gain detergent instead. What you can also do is take some (for a set shin and elbows, 1/3 of a cup) and mix with about equal parts water. Take it and apply it to the gear. (like spreading butter on bread, etc). Let sit for 5 minutes. Put in tub of warm-hot water. Let sit for 10 minutes. Agitate when needed. Take out, rince out.

If the water that comes out is brown/yellow, repeat process until the water rinses out clear.

To avoid it from smelling, don't need to use febreeze. 75% isopropyl mixed with 25% water and spray onto equipment after every use. Will hold back a lot of bacterial formation on gear. Can be done on shoulder pads, skates, gloves and chest protector as well.

All above equipment other than skates can also be cleaned with the detergent/bathtub method. <---good for getting crust/slime out of glove palms, gear, etc.

The above methods I follow religiously to prevent my goalie gear from stinking up. I'm probably the freshest smelling goalie in all of the lower mainland. LOL

I would also recommend anyone who is in a small place, don't want their place to smell, or don't have adequate drying time, to invest in a Rocket Sport Dryer. It's about $100 from Canadian tire, sport chek, hockey shops, etc. I have one and it really helps!

As for rink rentals:

Can-Lam ice rink in North Vancouver is VERY nice. I was just there a week ago with BLUETIGER. who's a fantastic goalie. Talk to him. He may know how much. It was only like...$10 a person for 1.5 hours?

SumAznGuy 06-07-2013 09:40 AM

There is a sunday night hockey at BWC that I play with. For summer it starts at 9pm and will go for 1.5 hours and is $17.
Last few times they have been short of players due to it being summer and summer league games have been mostly sundays so they are always looking for players.
Skill level is mixed. A few really good guys, a lot of pretty good guys and some noobs.
Just PM me and I'll forward the contact number.

very good idea with the isopropyl alcohol

BallPeenHammer2 06-07-2013 10:13 AM

almost forgot to mentioN:

Buying used gear?

Stinky?

Use above wash method! Renews everything for further use!

Also keeps existing fabrics and liners new and prolongs life. It's not just the wear n tear that breaks down equipment. A lot of it is the acidity and accumulation of sweat, minerals, etc from sweat that accelerates equipment breakdown!

how about cleaning skates? they are probably the smelliest...

you should remove the sole after every skate.. I never do, and never dealt with really smelly skates lol.... Maybe it's your laces? I know after a while my laces stink

BallPeenHammer2 06-07-2013 02:24 PM

you may have to wash it if it really smells. detach the blade (if possible) or just take the soles out, use detergent method on the soles. if your boot is heat molded, I would exercise caution before washing it. I would isopropyl/febreeze the boot a few times.

Laces can be washed. Clean the tongue as well. The tongue is what makes the laces stink. And sometimes the rest of the skate.

Most elimination of bad smells in gear is to start when gear is new. My mask, C/A, blocker+trapper and skates have been conditioned since new. It's been 4 days a week, sometimes up to 4 hours a day for 2 months now.....not a trace of stink!

dhari 06-07-2013 02:32 PM

Damn that's a lot of hockey! I wish I could have that much ice time :megusta:

for me it was always gloves then shin pads. If you find your skates smell try to get different socks which will help your feet breathe better. If that doesn't work you just have smelly feet lol

murd0c 06-07-2013 04:55 PM

Do any of you guys get lifts for the heel of your skates? I've always wondered who else have done that

!Nhan 06-07-2013 05:15 PM

i get a very slight heel lift. nothing i can do about it as i have stupid shaped feet.

although try superfeet yellow if you have it. its supposed to fix it, but i've never worn the insoles that come with skates and have always used superfeet so i can't give you a comparison

by heal life I mean it's between the skate chassis and boot so you lean a bit forward which helps you with acceleration. I've always had it since I was a kid and was wondering if anyone does it anymore?

Finished off my gear, had to rep Cloverdale with the socks :fuckyea:

haha. the way you worded that question can be interpreted depending on emphasis :p.

clover wut? j/k. stuff looks good. how big is that bag? 36"?

Spidey 06-07-2013 05:54 PM

^ got the old wool hockey socks eh grandpa? get with the program and go with the firstar or edge socks! hahah jk

grafs, nice! yea grafs all come with aggressive forward pitch chassis.. I have never worn em but if you are used to them, it shouldn't be a problem... i want to get my bauers profiled with a forward pitch as it comes neutral out of the box.

YzerWIN 06-07-2013 05:58 PM

I've got the same Bauer Premium bag as you do, pal. Such a solid bag eh? Highly recommend to anyone looking for a carry bag (although it also comes as wheeled) with a very durable base and plenty of room for adult gear!

I've only used wool socks, the other ones just looked weird to me for some reason.

The bag is a 33 didn't realize is was a med until now, think I'm going to exchange it since everything just fits and I would like more space.

I bought these Grafs about 13 years ago now, great skates and my 5 pair or so. I also have the first pair of Nike Ignites that came out as a spare set of skates.

Damn rights I gotta test fit it all, thought I had a jersey that would fit, I was kinda wrong about that part.
