Something that feels comfortable and gives you a good range of motion. I wouldn't order gear online unless I've tried it on to see how it feels - or at least something similar.

All of those lines have a particular "fit".

The new Reebok Kinetic series is pretty slim fitting. The shoulder caps are quite large, but out of all of the available shoulder pads I really liked (and bought) the 20K, which the 14K is very similar to.

The Vapors are a tapered fit, so they appear slim. I always find Bauer as the best bang for buck//all-around performer in terms of look, fit, and protection. But I haven't liked their shoulder pads for a while, but maybe you'll disagree with me.

The Nexus is a more "traditional" fit. Basically fits like anything you would've come across in the 80s/90s/early 2000s. This is the "safest" in terms of fit since there's more room in everything. The Nexus line will likely be the bulkiest, yet the most protective.

Elbow pads are very tricky, so I suggest checking locally to get a good fit. And if you're really noob, try on shin pads with skates. Depending on whether you tuck your skate tongue under your pad or if you flop it out will dictate how long your shin guard is.

Worst case, just drop by your local Sport Chek (which should have all of those pieces) and try them on and order online. With today's exchange rate (+ CC fees it's north of 1.15) you might be surprised that you can get it locally for a similar price than online.

I'm getting some hook ups on some gears tmr, currently looking at these 3. Which one do you guys recommend?

As a person who used 2 or the 3 helmets…

7500 - Good entry level helmet.

9900 - Was good at the time when it was new but later the glue thats hold one part of the pad comes off the left and right side of the temples.

IMS - Never used it but heard you either love it or hate it. Its suppose to be for players who get concussions.

Personally I use the Re-Akt, best helmet I've used by far.

+1 on the Reakt, though it's pricey if that matters.

rsx10's description of the IMS is a bit off. I think rsx10 was referring to the old Cascade (now Bauer) M11, which would be the new Bauer IMS 11.0.

The new IMS series from Bauer has a few entries. The 9.0 is a Reakt shell with VN padding. It's actually going to be my next helmet as I prefer the feel of VN foam to the EPP in the Reakt. Almost an identical fit- VN over time will mold to your head a bit better than the suspend liner in the Reakt, but at the beginning it's definitely a bit tighter than my Reakt first felt. After taking a few falls and hitting my head, I'm not sure the Reakt's marketing is worth the extra dollars, but it's damn comfy.

I never used the 7500 and 9900, but if they fit, that's what matters.


Helmets (along with skates) are the most important pieces of player equipment. If it doesn't fit, it'll bug you to the point of affecting your play. Make sure you try them all on before buying. There's no point getting a good deal on a lid if it causes you headaches on the ice. Get what fits and feels right, and the you'll soon forget the price.

I'm not really a Reebok guy anymore. The main reason is weight as we found at practice last night.

I was moaning about how heavy my Vaughns are compared to the Brians. So I busted out the old mtn bike scale, and weighed a few things. The pics are a bit fuzzy, but you get the idea that I'm not fooling. The numbers are legit.

My Brians weigh 4.72 lbs each.

Again, I was in a hurry so the pics suck ballz.

I weighed my buddie's P4 Reeboks (34+1") and was shocked to see that they weighed 6.22 lbs each!! They didn't feel that heavy when I tried them on the ice, but the scale doesn't lie.

The Vaughn 7600 blocker; 1.95 lbs

My mask was the big shocker. It's an Eddy GT Ultimate with aftermarket chin cup, and some duck tape graphics.

picked up the ism 9.0 helmet and a pair of bauer 4-roll pro gloves :D

Man I can't imagine what my V2s weigh then lol. My Eddy Ultimate GT III is likely around there. It definitely adds to the weight of my goalie bag. But I can't afford full carbon :(

Good pickup on the helmet and gloves. I have 4 pairs of 4-rolls. But my main ones I repalm every 2 seasons. The others are for ball/inline hockey lol

Did you buy then locally? Or on HM?

locally, i got the size 13" and i think im a 12"

They're a loose-fit glove. If it feels too sloppy, try a 12in or move to a tighter glove. A good thing about going down to a 12 is that it should be Jr pricing lol

4 rolls are awesome... they are def wide, especially compared to the vapor and other slimmer fitting gloves these days.. I personally like it loose (said no guy, ever!)

If you think it is loose now, wait until the padding inside wears down, it'll feel super sloppy.

Very true about the padding wearing down and the glove being super loose. At that point though, when I repalm, I ask that the finger gussets be slimmed down about a quarter of an inch. It keeps the glove fingers a bit snug while keeping the wrist nice and loose. I can get about 4-5 seasons out of each pair before I have to get a new one due to wear. But damn they're so good broken in.

Just got off the phone with Cam @ THS. The gear should be in transit, but nothing confirmed. I hope it's worth the wait :okay: Placed order back in early Jan.

Need some recommendation

I need either a bag or some sort of solution to dry my gear for someone living in a small space. Summer is coming up drying the gear creates a smell problem.

I've figured out the space issue with storing using Grit Tower, but drying..
Because i live in a small space, its kinda difficult to dry properly

How are some of you living in small spaces dry gear

if you dry your gear after every game, it should not smell, or at least it should not smell for a long time. I just finished my winter season where I aired out my gear religiously and it does not smell. I washed everything thoroughly before the season stared. The best way is to wash your gear by soaking it/hand wash, then throwing what fits into a front loader... Those gear wash places that are offered at the rink don't seem to work very well.

Im probably gonna make this, pretty cheap with all the materials from Rona:

^that would be your best bet, as an actual tree can run upwards of 50 bucks.

Alternatively, you can get a rail that you can attach S hooks on. Every piece of equipment can be hooked up on a S hook, and a rail is about as low cost as it gets. But it looks mighty ugly lol
