Can you imagine the attention you would get from import owners and car lovers a like?
I had a ride in the one in Vancouver around 2002. Blue R34 GTR with full Cwest kit, 19" Advan Model 5 in bronze. Motrexed car owned by an owner of Garage SPL in Seattle. The car is now Do Luck sponsored and tours the show scene in the US.
Riding down Robson on a Saturday it turned heads like crazy. | It's a very exclusive and head turning car for 5 years and the cost for that is $180,000.
Who ever bought that car will have a very hard time selling it at 1/5 of the price afterward.
The price may still be there but there are no market for it.
$180,000 can pick up a 996 GT2 which is also very exclusive and much better and faster car when both in stock form.
And there is a R35 sitting at the dealership asking $110,000.
BOth cars still have their value afterward.
This car bought so much attention in Canada is because it hasn't meet the 15 years rule yet.
After 5 years when they meet the 15 years rule no one is going to give a damn about it.
Just like the R32.

yeah the 15 year old rule will totally destroy the value of this car
$180 for a ubuilt "been cut, been back together" or $20k for a cherry one....

i'm still confused about the part regarding getting DOT approval in new york for the headlights...

egh i went to ask about it on gtrcanada.com and there is a thread that is already running for a bit now: http://forums.gtrcanada.com/showthread.php?t=31635
it's the same car you've all seen at the RS meet a few years back at spanish banks.

While I don't agree with how much it costs, you guys also have to realize that a good chunk of money was likely put into making this thing DOT-approved. They had to fabricate new headlights and have them officially tested by the government twice. If you're doing that for a couple thousand cars, the price isn't too bad. But because it was a one-off custom job, it'll be more expensive. Plus there's the price of the original car in Japan, labour costs of dismantling it, packing up all the pieces securely, shipping it, unpacking, assembling parts, making sure it all works properly, getting road-worthiness approval, etc., etc. There's a lot more work involved than simply driving a car into a container and shipping it over.

I have checked that the chassis must be in more than THREE pieces at the beginning to be considered a Ubilt in UK now. So what people do is chop the car up in the half way length and remove the roof from the car and ship it like that.
I don't know about Canada but I would guess the rule is similar.

Thats a good point about the 15 year rule. Once the R34 GTR is 15 years old more will be coming in to Canada and this one will depreciate very quickly.
That's assuming we still have the 15 year rule at that point!

hm. now that you mention this... what if icbc extends the 15 year rule? maybe 20 years? 30 years? or bans imports totally? that would make this car worth... who knows? but still a risky "investment" eh |
