15-year-old caught in Vancouver shooting dies - British Columbia - CBC News

15-year-old caught in Vancouver shooting dies

The teenage bystander who was caught in a shooting in Vancouver on Saturday night has died, according to the B.C. Coroner's Service, along with the man thought to have been the intended target.

The 15-year-old boy was shot while riding in a vehicle with his parents when gunfire erupted near East Broadway and Ontario Streets, a busy intersection south of the city's downtown, around 9:15 p.m. local time.

On Monday, hours before his death, Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer said the boy remained on life support but was "not expected to live."

"What a tragic, terrible event this is. We can't recall something like this happening in our city in a very long time," Palmer said at the time. "It's heartbreaking.

'I saw people running. I thought it was fireworks.'
— Helene Childs, witness
"My heart goes out to the family… we will not ever be able to fully comprehend your grief, but the Vancouver Police Department will do whatever it takes to seek justice for your son."

Palmer also said it is "extremely rare" for an incident like this to happen in Vancouver and that it was a "reckless, reprehensible" crime.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson also offered his condolences Monday evening.

"This news is incredibly painful and it angers me that this attack — an act of senseless violence — has taken the life of an innocent victim," he said in a statement.

Police have not released the boy's name but say he is from Coquitlam, a suburb east of Vancouver.

A spokesperson for School District 43, which covers the Coquitlam area, confirmed the boy was a student of the district.

Peter Chevrier said support services are being provided to affected students.

The intended target of the shooting, 23-year-old Kevin Whiteside of Vancouver, also died in hospital, Palmer said on Monday.

Turned and ran
"It's so sad. It's just horrible. I don't know if it's just the Canadian in me but I would not thought of anything like that happening," said witness Helene Childs, who was out walking near her apartment when she saw the shooting.

"I saw people running. I thought it was fireworks."

Bryan Zawada had just left band practice with friends near Ontario Street when he heard shots and saw a man firing what looked like a semi-automatic weapon.

"We look up and just hear shots firing and see a guy running across the street firing a semi-automatic rifle. We just turned around and ran," said Zawada.

"It was so rattling. It was almost surreal," he said.

Intended victim
According to court records, Whiteside had numerous run-ins with the law, including drug trafficking and assault charges. He was found guilty of assault with a weapon and breach of probation in 2016.

Another man in his 30s suffered minor injuries in the shooting and was released after being treated at the scene. Police said he wasn't targeted.

A statement said more than 50 officers are on the investigation. It's the city's first homicide of 2018. Police say no arrests have been made.

Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting is asked to call investigators at (604) 717-2500.

watching the news yesterday.

apparently some rough looking guy (buzz cut, shitty basement tattoos) stepped out his car after cutting someone off in a road rage incident and the other guy pulled out a firearm and shot him to death right then & there near the PNE area

IMO...not very good to act like a rough guy around the wrong people, esp gangsters at 1:30 am in the morning

preventable not to get into drama, reminds me of this time a 16 year old punk kid keyed up a Mercedes benz, all mean while its a known gangsters car that shot him 3 times in the chest near the sidewalk tree.

Hondaracer 08-14-2018 03:57 PM

Imo I’m just basing this on living in the area but to me is seems like there was more to it than just road rage.

A) the chick in the passenger seat of the victims car. Police pleading for Dash cam footage etc. can’t the witness IN the victims car give a fairly good account and description of what happened? I know everything helps but if somthing escalated to that point you’d think they could remember very clearly what happened.

B) the road that he ended up getting shot on is a complete dead end industrial road that runs pretty much under the iron workers. Unless you work there or are cycling into Burnaby there is no reason to go down there. Hell, even if you were trying to flee the instigator, you’d have to be pretty unlucky and not know the area -at all- to end up down there from Renfrew and McGill

twitchyzero 08-14-2018 06:38 PM

the victim was the passenger

eyewitness account can be very unreliable

the road rage started at Bridgeway but the shooting happened at Renfrew/hastings after the driver got out of the car to apologize

said this before in other thread but never got out of your car if the other party is getting really worked up...keep your windows closed and be sure to have a clear exit/getaway path

Hondaracer 08-14-2018 07:20 PM

The car and the outline of the vehicle etc seemed to be on bridgeway?

twitchyzero 08-14-2018 08:02 PM

stand corrected

apparently they cut off the shooter near PNE around McGill...the shooting happened on or near Bridgeway

I do agree it's weird they would drive into sucha quiet/dark area when they're being followed

she must be in so much shock she didn't even recall the make/model, shooter's description, etc.

and if it's this is targeted the news will probably say the victim was known to the police

Do some research. I suggest you look up Dangerous Offender status and why the criteria is so hard to achieve. Start from there..
