The sad reality is money in the drug trade is too lucrative and there's nothing the community or police can do to prevent kids from joining gangs or selling drugs. As long as there's buyers, they'll be suppliers. If one person gets killed, they'll be plenty others who want to take the top spot.

And every time there's gang violence I read comments that the gov't should legalize all drugs but it's not going to make a difference. Marijuana got legalized but the illegal Marijuana market is still booming.

The difference with the hard drugs though is that presumably if the dose is the same the clean opiates would always be preferred over any street level stuff
