City News (1130) has been doing a series on how school aged children have been very negatively affected by COVID (as far as learning and development are concerned). Normally, even children would have developed some conflict resolution skills as part of their normal school life and socialization. But with COVID lockdowns and such, cohorts of students have either under-developed or not at all developed these normal life and socialization skills.
The Surrey kid in this case is 17, and seems to be a good kid. So he would have been 13 - 14 at the start of COVID. Those 14 - 17 teenage years are usually transformative. It is not unreasonable to assume that he might have done better if the world hasn't gone through COVID lockdowns.
That said, seeking help from authorities should have been a go-to skill for children and teenagers alike. He was texting his mom, so that was a form of it. Still, my adult brain is thinking that the default and most appropriate choice at the time should have been the bus driver. Unfortunately, it is not obvious how much help he has tried to seek.
On another note, we have another day, and another stabbing -- this time in Delta, happening to a 15 yr old kid. The police say the stabbing was targeted though.
I have a friend who works as a high school counsel, and I'm gonna try to him a bit to see how common it is nowadays for kids to carry weapons to school. Many years ago -- probably something like 5 - 7 years? -- he was telling me that it is not uncommon for kids who get picked on, or otherwise feel like they are under threat from other kids, to carry knives with them. Some would even carry handguns and flash them as a means of deterrent. At the time, I remember thinking how kids just used to settle our scores in high schools with fist fights. Sometimes you have gang (ie. group) fights, but they were all just fists and kicks and nothing beyond that.
Gosh... how I am glad I ain't a kid in this day and age. At the same time, I feel worse because I know this is what my kid is gonna be running into.
I hope the attackers get caught and get tried as adults.
Attackers should all get a stabbing instead
On a different note, in regards to the India whipping video:
My buddy just came back from Singapore, and he said the penalty for x or y was the choice of jail or a whipping. Most people chose jail every time because the whipping was so bad you could not shit or sit on your ass for days.

There's not stabbings in most Asian countries writ large.
This isn't politics, it's a cultural issue.
We have a shitty culture, we lack community, we lack cohesiveness, we prioritize ourselves and ourselves only. We glorify violence, it's in everything we consume, the results were only inevitable.
Yea I was going to add to that previous post that it seems like most Asian societies, even in places touching more 3rd world status like Thailand etc. Have a much larger tradition of respect than North America does

Not neccesary true.... There are mass knife attacks in Asian country too. Several in China in year alone. Thailand, Malaysia occasionally have the same type of random stabbing.
They don't get the same media attention thou. and Some place obv sensor the shit of it.
Really the only asian society with no major violent crime in the past century, would be the ultra-strict Singapore.
Western society would never agree to authoritative laws like Singapore.
Holly shit if this is true. Remember the guy who got stabbed to death at a star bucks for telling a guy to stop vapping? Well according to the guy wo filmed it the guy who gor stabbed qas the one whompulled out the knife.
Isn’t that the same attention grabbing kid with the first video? I’ll wait for the report. Great idea for some views though.
Not the most credible source, grain of salt unless more information is provided.

It'll be interesting to see what the actual story is. I'm still betting on buddy guy instead of the dude with his kid but hey, strange times out there.

No I'm talking about if the father pulled the knife that was the murder weapon as mentioned above. In that case there is no way a murder charge would (or should) stick.
