IHIT is investigating a police-involved shooting that happened right outside the Vancouver police department in the Downtown Eastside this morning.

Emergency reports indicated violence broke out around 10 a.m. at Gore Avenue and Cordova Street.

Police taped off a block in the area and a burgundy van could be seen in the middle of the intersection, surrounded by police cars. An officer at the scene would only say that “a bad guy got shot.”

Cpl. Dale Carr released a statement at 1:30 p.m. saying “IHIT has been called in to conduct the investigation into the police involved shooting in Vancouver.”

There are no details about the deceased’s identity.

At the scene, an area resident who did not want to be named, told a Province reporter “a Chinese drug dealer got shot in the van.”

^ What a vague story.

StylinRed 04-11-2011 02:19 AM

^^ the same story was updated

sounds like a rookie may have been a little too nervous because the IHIT officer in charge of the investigation simply said the victim "produced a weapon" rather than say "brandished weapon threateningly @ officers" or "attempted to attack officers" etc

A man is recovering in hospital after being shot by a Vancouver police officer in the Downtown Eastside Sunday morning.

Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said a VPD officer shot the 47-year-old man during a routine patrol after a confrontation turned violent.
(routine patrol leading to a violent confrontation? or a routine stop after a violent confrontation occurred? shitty reporting)

Quote:

“The man produced a weapon, which caused one of the two police officers to draw his service pistol and fire an undetermined amount of rounds at the individual,” he said.

The shooting victim, whose name has not been released, was rushed to hospital for surgery.

Emergency reports indicated violence broke out around 10 a.m. at Gore Avenue and Cordova Street.

Police taped off a block surrounding the area and a burgundy van could be seen in the middle of the intersection, surrounded by police cars. An officer at the scene would only say that “a bad guy got shot.”

In a statement, VPD said the two officers involved have 18 months and 19 years of service, respectively, with the VPD.

The shooting occurred just up the street from the Vancouver Police Department and behind the downtown community court, an area which sees heavy street drug dealing.

While few details are known, an area resident who is part of the local drug culture told a Province reporter “a Chinese drug dealer got shot in the van.”

IHIT is sometimes brought in by other police agencies to investigate officer-involved shootings.

Police in B.C. have been long criticized for investigating their own. Two recent commissions of public inquiry, the Davies Commission in 2009 and the Braidwood Inquiry in 2010, recommended that police stop investigating themselves.

StylinRed 04-14-2011 01:23 PM

So the guy that was shot is NOT known to police

He's in critical condition

apparently he was carrying a weapon (reportedly a knife, unconfirmed)

1 of the officers (rookie i bet) fired an undetermined amount of shots @ the victim and the police wont release the amount of shots fired
Quote:

VANCOUVER — A 47-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot by two Vancouver police officers in the Downtown Eastside early Sunday.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called in to investigate because incidents involving police officers require an independent body, said Cpl. Dale Carr, who confirmed the case did not involve a homicide.

Carr said the two officers were on regular patrol duties in the area of Gore Avenue and Cordova Street at around 9:45 a.m. The area where the shooting happened is near the Vancouver police department in a part of the city known for drugs and crime.

As police neared the intersection, a man approached them wielding a weapon. Carr would not confirm earlier reports that the man was holding a knife.

One of the officers pulled out a gun and shot the man. Carr said investigators are not releasing the number of shots fired.

The man was treated by ambulance attendants and taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound. He remained in critical condition and his family has been notified.

The victim is not known to police, he said.

Vancouver police officers released very few details about what happened but VPD spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness said the two officers involved have 18 months, and 19 years of service with the VPD.

IHIT is interviewing more than a dozen witnesses and hope to have a clearer idea of what happened when that investigation is complete, said Carr.

Traffic was blocked from Powell to Hastings streets and between Gore and Main streets while homicide detectives investigated.

Drew Snider, a spokesman for TransLink, said buses that travel on Cordova were being diverted and as a result some were running behind schedule.

Quote:

SURREY (NEWS1130) -If you were in the area of 128th Street and 68th Avenue in Surrey just before 11 last night, homocide investigators want to talk to you, especially if you noticed a white SUV driving erratically.

Police are trying to find the killer responsible for a deadly shooting last night.
Corporal Dale Carr with IHIT says the 30-year-old man was hit during a confrontation with a driver after a minor car crash. "The Ford Explorer apparently crossed the centre line and came into contact with a Lexus. That's when the driver of the Lexus stopped, exited, and went over to confront the driver of the SUV."

The victim is a 30-year-old Surrey man who police say got out of his Lexus to confront the driver of a white SUV after a minor car crash. That's when he was shot, perhaps several times. A witness tells News1130 he heard at least six shots just after 11 p.m..
Paramedics were seen providing CPR to the victim. Carr tells us the man was pronounced dead when he was taken to hospital.

The man police are looking for sped away from the scene. "The driver is described as a South Asian male -- very general description -- driving a white SUV, thought to be a Ford Explorer, with a silver trim along the bottom of the vehicle," explains Carr.

He can't yet say if there's any connection -- gang or otherwise -- between the drivers of the two high-end vehicles, or if this is a disturbing case of road rage.
Anyone who was in the area around the time of the shooting is asked to contact the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Shit's FUCKED! Looks like the victim was driving a white Lexus IS...and since when is a Ford Explorer a "high-end vehicle"?

RIP to the victim...

that's what i said about both vehicles

If this was planned, the killer is an idiot for crashing into the guy he could have destroyed his getaway or left evidence

if this was road rage he'll have been spotted @ a club/bar getting drunk (drunk since he went into oncoming)

I'm having trouble believing it was planned... because he was coming from the other side of the street... unless he was waiting for the Lexus to arrive to crash into him; then his car would have likely been spotted parked @ the scene in wait
