Gold Fish, or any fresh water fish

My dad has a fishtank, it's either 100 gallons or 70 gallons. could be litres as well. not quite sure.

anyhow it only has 2 fish in it because i called the other 16,
this was 2 years ago, i want to get some more fish for him but the place he gets fish from always die.

Where woudl you suggest to get fish in the lower mainland?

i'm willing to travel in Vancouver and to Richmond/Burnaby

Thanks!

King ED pets, Big AL's (pricy),...etc

tell me where you got the fish that always dies!, maybe its the stress from acclimatizing or poor water quality in your dads tank.

pH balance + ammonia+nitrate balance could be off.?

my dad doesn't watch the ph balance or anything,

i think there are too many stresses in the tank, but i killed them off by over feeding.

i think main point of why my dad's fish die is because when he changes the water, he changes to much of the water. but he's slowly stopped doing that.

he gets his fish from APets in Richmond.

i think i shoudl teach him how to take care of the fish first,

and i should i probably clean the tank before introducing the new fish right?

Make sure your tank is cycled/parameters are good, before adding more fish. Get a test kit.

Check out places like Fraser Aquarium or North American Pet Stores on Kingsway, I'm pretty sure they sell of a lot of gold fish and can give good tips on keeping them alive. Google is also your friend.

North American Pet Store, I wouldn't recommend them personally, unless they really cleaned up their act since I last went there.

My dad used to always buy our aquarium supplies from there, but when I went there to buy fish food, I checked the back of the packages and they were months expired and the lady tried to tell me it wasn't from the cash register then I pointed out the expiry date to her and she's like 'oh, I'll get you some new ones'.

They do have a lot of fish, but at least 90% of the fish were terribly sick, including the large koi's, they had some kind of fungus growing all over them and had huge tumors on them with chunks of flesh missing. Many of the fish were missing their eyes, I guess they had parasites on them and other fishes pecked each other's eyes out.

aprils on dunbar and 41st for fairly cheap freshwater community fish
http://www.petsbeautiful.com/

you can take the measurements of the tank (LxWxH) and use google to find out the exact gallon size. what kind of filter are you running, it should at least be a Hang on back filter. i would recommend buying a canister filter such as a Rena XP 2 for your tank size. it's a good investment of about $150 bucks or so from king eds.

only change 30% of the water at a time (unless you know what you are doing) and match the temperature each time you do it.

if you have no type of filter, then there is nothing for the beneficial bacteria to grow on that breaks down nitrates/wastes etc.

um i think fish are the hardest common household pets to take care of.

gold fish are cold water, a lot of fresh water fish sold are tropical. they obviously don't mix.

if you worried about the parameters buy a test kit- they aren't expensive and then you'll know whats wrong with your water- possible that it's not cycled?

water changes like mentioned above 30% each time and maybe 2-3 times a week depending on how many fishes and how much bio load. n make sure the temp is right for the fish.

fish keeping isn't hard its just a bit time consuming and takes a little care but once you get the hang of it its simple
