Telus to invest $500 million in B.C. infrastructure
Telus announced, on Tuesday, its plan to invest $500 million in British Columbia, focused mainly on advanced wireless and wireline broadband infrastructure.
Among the investments is a flagship Internet data centre that will be built in one of several B.C. communities under consideration. The facility, scheduled to open in 2011, will have the capacity to support both B.C. and national clients and aims to be "green," said Telus in a release -- at least twice as energy-efficient as existing centres. It will be Telus's third and biggest data centre in B.C., eventually employing up to 200 people.
In addition, early next year the company will launch its next-generation wireless network, both in B.C. and nationally, which is expected to ensure a smooth transition to long-term evolution (LTE) technology, the emerging standard for 4G wireless networks. Telus's broadband wireline investment will expand the reach of its new broadband services in B.C. and Alberta.
"Our 8,700 British Columbia-based team members and 9,200 retirees are proud of Telus's legacy in this province and despite the challenging times, we are confident in making significant investments that benefit the economy, our communities, and our customers," said president and CEO Darren Entwistle in a statement.
