| windshield replacement
Hey guys,
Wondering where a good place would be to get OEM windshield glasss replacement for a bmw 335xi. I want to make sure i get OEM (i think since its a 2008 ICBC will pay for OEM?)
Is speedy autoglass any good? Whats the best place for quality?

You're better off going to the dealership since ICBC is paying for the repair. Not all dealerships do windshields in-house though, so you want to call ahead and find out.

Most dealerships outsource windshields to aftermarket companies. There are a few with in house techs that do it, but be careful. a good deal of these in house techs do one window every two weeks, and although they are factory trained to do it, they can be far out of practice, and behind the times on modern techniques and what not. Not to say they are all like that, there are some very well trained and skilled glass technicians within the dealerships.
And I hate to say it, but there are a good deal of aftermarket installers that are absolutely useless at even the most basic vehicle and should be nowhere near anything higher end or exotic. Do your research if you are concerned, the windshield is a very important part of a vehicles safety especially in an accident, not to mention the glass in vehicle is more and more becoming a part of the structure. If not done right, there are many problems that can occur, from the very basic leaks, to strange noises, rust and corrosion, delamination of adhesive, not to mention a good few others.

it depends on your insurance policy if you get an OEM windshield or not.

does your vehicle have options :
(this is where the last 7 digits of VIN# comes handy)
S521 rain sensor ?
S534 automatic a/c ?
S354 Green wedge or S3APA Grey wedge ?
typically, you'll be replacing the w/shield itself, along with the condensation sensor if you have S534 and rain sensor is included with the w/shield already, plus the top moulding will be covered by ICBC, however the lower one should be denied for replacement by ICBC in recent months.
also,
if yes to all 3 options = OEM only as far as I remember it. Seeing as yours is a 335xi E9x you should have all those options as it is quite common on your car's trim level. 
dealers can handle windshield claims inhouse with certified techs.

It actually appears to be that you can get all 3 windshield options aftermarket now, although it also appear that the third option is a factory windshield supplied thru the aftermarket. Either way if you can get the OEM branded piece by all means you should. Although it is said that the aftermarket pieces are as good as factory, in some cases that is just not the truth. The oem tend to have better edge finishes, solar layers and other small things taht make them better. Not to mention the OEM mouldings are far far superior to most any aftermarket piece. and with the mouldings you should only need to replace the top one, as the bottom is saveable in the windshield replacement process.

Don't flame me for bumping a 7 month old thread.
Just wondering if OP found a place to replace his windshield or can someone recommend me a place to do it? I would also like OEM glass if possible. Its for a IS300. Would I need to worry about what !NiteRaven said in post #6? I suppose I don't have any of those. | |

Speedy is actually one of the more expensive shops
to patch up a rock chip they charge $79.99
while Broco and one of this other charges $45 bux

I work for Boyd Autobody & Glass - we replace a lot of higher end windshields and will most often use an OEM part on specific type vehicles (BMW, Mercedes... etc.) on those cars with standard style (Honda, Toyota... etc.) we will source an aftermarket part.
Most autoglass is made in the same factory as OEM glass anyways. The only difference is the stamping in the lower corner. That being said... if the part is not identical to the part being replaced, any reputable shop should be sourcing an OEM part regardless.

Huh, if you go through ICBC, you get OE spec glass... no matter where you go. You need to pay extra only if a OEM (manufacturer equivalent) glass is available and you really want an OE (original equipment) glass, basically the difference is it has the car manufacturers' logo on it.
Dealerships like Brian Jessels etc just farm out glass replacement to mobile shops anyways just like they do with rim repairs like NuBrite.. I rather go to a glassshop they get it done right in their shop, rather than a mobile service.
For late model BMWs the rain sensor is on the glass, so the glass is over a few thousand a pop. Quote:

Some shops would do it for free, just to attract customers (eg Anvil). Often it just depends on the volume of the shop and people's attitude. Quote:

1. Is there is deadline to get this fixed until ICBC decline my claim?
2. Where is a good shop?
3. How long does it take? Do they usually give you a courtesy car/ride?

call brian jessel bmw, they have an icbc tech team that handles anything and everything with icbc (outside of bodywork, which is sent to no1 collision).
that way u know for sure u will be getting and using a bmw oem windshield.
and
FAIL, didnt realize it was dated all the way back to 2009.

for windshield claims, i forgot if its 1 or 2 years.
a good shop, try rich city (i think they are owned by a toyota dealership)
i would say it would take at least a few hours, remove old windshield, prep for new one, put new one in, and let the glue cure. Quote:

Bumping again. Sorry but I don't see the point starting a new thread when we already have one.
My 1996 4Runner has a massive crack in the windshield and it needs replacing. Luckily I have comprehensive so it can be cheaply done. But since it's $200 regardless, where's the best place that does it? The previous owner had the windshield replaced once prior, and I am pretty sure it leaks...
...would rather go somewhere with a warranty that they actually honor. OEM/non-OEM, I don't care as long as it's safe and seals 100%. Thanks!
