Beijing to face-lift main avenue

Beijing municipal government kicked off a five-month renovation of Chang'an Avenue on Friday to get the city's main thoroughfare ready for the grand parade to mark New China's 60th anniversary on Oct 1.

The main task of the renovation work is to strengthen the road surface to fully upgrade the thoroughfare, which has not undergone major renovation during the past decade.

The repair work, which will take place daily from 11pm to 5am, covers an area of 700,000 sq m stretching from Nanlishi Street to Sihui near Beijing's Central Business District and is to finish prior to Aug 30.

Existing 8 lane traffic will be extended to 10 lanes.

Beijing Traffic Management Bureau has called on motorists to take the nearby Ping'an Avenue, Liangguang Street, Qiansanmen Street and North Tonghuihe Road in the evenings.

It said it would keep the public informed as to what sections of the road would be under construction and suggest alternative routes. Noise and air pollution resulting from the work will be reduced with the use of advanced technology, Liu Xiaoming, director of the Beijing municipal committee of communications, has said.

Meanwhile, the sidewalks along Chang'an Avenue will also be renovated.

Why is Vancouver's projects so damn slow? The damn Canada line. If this was in China, it will be built literally in 2 months. Damn lazy workers. 10 lanes traffic... we don't even have roads that are more than 2 lanes. sad.

Stuff gets built in China faster than here because there's no need for any public inquiry and all that bs. The Chinese government wants to build something, they just do it.

That is going to be chaos especially during hot summer months. I was there for work in January and had to take that street every day to my client's office. Think Granville St. X 3 in terms of size and traffic. Crazy.

Yep. It's insane how fast things get done there! When I was studying there, they re-did a whole block and the sidewalk in a few weeks. One day the whole place is a mess, the next days you're just stunned, lol.

Well, snap a finger and you literally have thousands of willing workers at your disposal and they don't have this union red tape crap.
