I think vancouver (at least the city of Vancouver) banned the sale of any water turtle like 10 years back. I wont recommand to keep RES as pet anyway. it needs a big tank, like a 10 gallon for 2 babies (size of a loonie) to 50 gallon when they grow big in a few years. also they really stink, you need a very good filtering system to keep the water clean.

yeah don't go turtles unless you're SERIOUS about keeping them for a long time.
There's really no where to "Get rid" of them.
Ponds don't do it.

Yea, HK sells them for like $10 HKD. Here, they go for 50-60 dollars CDN. Make sure you are willing to take on the responsibility before you commit to a turtle. You will need a big water tank, a power filter (Canister type), submersible heater and UV lights = Lots of $$ and time.

Just limit the amount of food they eat so they don't get too big.

The stink part is true if you don't maintain the tank (not difficult but you can't do absolutely nothing), and their shells shed large flakes. When I cleaned out our tank and dumped the old water into the toilet I was surprised at how much crap was in the water. It looked almost like diarrhea.

With that said, our pet RES is a cute but kind of dumb little bugger. Other than the tank cleaning every 3 months or so, there's virtually no maintenance involved. They supposedly live 50+ years though, so get ready for a lifetime of feedings.
