My gf was in Vietnam for business last month and she said that the people there seem very poor. There are TONS of motorbikes on the roads and the roads all have potholes etc.

so some things i learned today

english menu = ripoff, but its only an extra 1 or 2 usd usually.

for example i went to 46a bahn xeo (which is probably hcmc best vietnamese crepe place here)
paid 100 vnd for
1 bababa beer
1 caphe sua da
1 bahn xeo
1 spring rolls.

Trusted cabs = Mailihn and Vinasun. Everything else is a scam AND ALWAYS ASK FOR THE METER ON.

Tshirts = 30k to 60k dong. Anything more is a scam, but remember they need to make profit too. I had no problem paying 100k per shirt (5 usd) and 520k for 3 pairs of shorts.

xe om dude once they know ur foreign even if ur viet they harsh jew you on the cab rides and everything you buy, trick is to bargain, MOST of the time they wont nudge until you leave and come back later on. you can also negotiate on multiple items lol go try some hardcore snake liqour!

majin: if you are still in saigon or something you should check out the cu chi tunnels, its everything to do with the viet cong tunnels preety sweet you cant miss it

foods awesome. once you know the right prices of everything, it's awesome. But i really need to leave hcmc. Infact im going to ask the conceirege if i can get a bus ticket to dalat. Then to nha trang then hoi an then hue then flying to hanoi and finishing in halong bay, then flying back.

I'm down to my last 1000 dollars. I'm a little worried. I burned 1500 dollars in tokyo in 4 days, and paypal has a hold on 3k of my money right now, until i get feedback for the items I sold on ebay. So visa might be getting a phone call :(

Dood, you know that locals get Bahn Mi for 1000 VND (ie 7 CENTS CAD) right? Mind you, being a tourist, I was unable to bargain below 2000VND. But man, I wish it didn't take me a week to figure that out..

HCMC = go visit Cu Chi tunnels. Also there's a kickass food nightmarket just N/NE of District 1.

Da Lat = cute town. Nothing much there other than an orphanage and a waterfall. Rent a moped.

Nha Trang = Cancun (tourist trap, but omg do the BOAT TOUR and prepare to get sh!tfaced in the ocean :lol). Watch out for aggressive pickpocketing hookers!

Hue = awesome if you're a history buff.

Hanoi = go visit Uncle Ho's mausoleum and the Hanoi Hilton.

yeah but 70 cents is still cheap.

But I didn't mind. I got the bahn xeo, spring rolls, an ice coffee, and a bababa for 4 and 50 cents.

You can't avoid getting scammed as a tourist. One look and they'll know. $4.50 is still a gyp. You can get pitchers of self-serve beer (bia hoi or bia toi) for 3000VND (20c CAD) if you look in the right places.

For bargaining, I'd say you can get 67% (ie 2/3) off the initial price, not 3/4. The 2/3 ratio seemed to hold true over 8 different cities.
