Esquimalt Liberal MP to introduce bill to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana

"A Vancouver Island MP is calling for the decriminalization of marijuana, saying the war on drugs "has been a complete failure.''

Keith Martin, the Federal Liberal MP for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca, backed up that plea by tabling a bill in Ottawa Thursday that would make it legal to possess up to 30 grams of pot or two marijuana plants.

"The war on drugs has been a complete failure,'' Martin told the House of Commons. He said the bill aims to break the ties between the simple marijuana user and organized crime elements.

This would be achieved, Martin said, by eliminating demand for the product and undermining the financial underpinnings of organized crime in Canada.

He said anyone caught with amounts of over 30 grams, would face a fine instead of having to go through the legal system.

Martin said proceeds could be used to fund programs that aim to prevent children from using drugs.

I know more baby boomers than people my own age who are marijuana users.

Legalize pot and increase speed limits on highways. Anyone who does either of these will automatically have my vote.

No, I'm not a smoker, but lawmakers need to re-evaluate laws that criminalize significant portions of the population for habits that don't hurt anyone. No I'm not a pothead, but I'd take 2nd hand pot smoke over tobacco smoke anyday.

This is perfect. Would cut down on dial-a-dope businesses, and legit people wouldnt risk going to court/legal system for smoking a plant.

i have no problem with the speed limit we have now .. my beef is god damn bored cops sitting behind signs or corners waiting for some loser to speed when what they could be doing is patrolling the area for other more significant crimes

You mean the baby boomers who were in their early to mid 20's during the 60's when there was marijuana, 'shrooms, PCP and LSD readily available everywhere?

Honestly, not everyone was a hippy back then, and not everyone that's experimented with drugs feels that they should be legal. It takes generations for views on things to take change for the majority of the population.
