Selling items to someone who lives in the states

I want to sell something and want to get it across the border. Is it possible that I do not get taxed on it? The item is really big and I can't and don't want to hide it.

What if I get the guy to come up to pick it up. Does he get taxed in this case?

woops I wanted this to be in offtopic. If some mod is put this in there it would be awesome.

sexyaccord 04-20-2009 06:46 PM

why would you get taxed on it when you are exporting?
just ship with canada post and avoid fedex/ups/dhl etc

or you could drive down the border then ship it.

Rikaro 04-20-2009 07:23 PM

so if I drive items down to sell I won't be taxed on it?

Rikaro 04-20-2009 07:23 PM

I don't have receipts for it. Would it be fine as well?

JSALES 04-20-2009 07:32 PM

i think you could get taxed because they could assume you bought it here

dkvby 04-20-2009 07:59 PM

you might get taxed, but the recipient will not.
if you ship from canada, you will not get taxed, and the recipient will have a chance that he/she will get taxed

The person importing the item would be responsible for taxes and duties.

You bring it across the border and deliver it = you are the importer to the United States.
He picks it up in Canada and drives it across = he is the importer.
You ship it across the border to him = he is the importer.

just drive down to the boarders with it, and if you get taxed then ask to turn around. lol

i drove down to Point Roberts to ship something out once and was told that there was something like a $10 fee per item that you are sending out or something like that...but he let me go because it was my first time and didnt know about it

godwin 04-20-2009 09:53 PM

That's the documentation fee.. it goes on top on the taxes and duties.

Can't do that.. you will already be in the custody of the border agency.. that's why the turn around lane is before the guard shacks.

i was thinking of bringing my bench press and pilates thing to sell over in the states because my sister is having a garage sale but i don't think it'd be worth it to get taxed and shit haha

originalhypa 04-21-2009 11:31 AM

It's all depending on the value you give the item.
If it's worth $100, you get taxed on the $100. Granted, there have been situations where customs has applied their own value. It's BS, but it's in their power to do so.

Bottom line, you can't cross the border with items for sale, without paying some sort of tax and duty.
