Plugs are only used as a temporary fix, it can be pulled while driving which is why it is illegal. Shops still do it but that is only when the owner needs a new tire and doesnt want to spend money on a patch that they will throw away in a short period of time.

I got a nail in my tire like that before, didnt lose any air either. But i got it patched from the inside just to be safe. It cost me like....$35. Takes the guys at the tire shop 15-20 minutes to do.

What kind of car do you have?
cause when I had a nail in my tire, I just took it to Acura (yes I have an acura) and they only charged me $25 (they will patch it up from the inside)
just book an appointment and it should be done quickly
